Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forum"Pure democracy"
Today, a young woman interviewed on msnbc said that she's for Bernie because he wants to get back to pure democracy. I'm not sure we ever had that - pure democracy - but it did seem to be an idea that Americans believed in once.
Many of us still do believe in it - the "revolution" is about that idea and is, as he has said, much bigger than Bernie Sanders. Whether he wins or loses, it will go on - and imo it has to be all about achieving PURE DEMOCRACY. It means reforming our entire system, including:
- campaign financing (and overturning CU)
- providing verifiable voting
- election holidays so everyone can vote
- primary/caucus reform
(Iowa and NH are not more important than your state!)
- getting rid of the Electoral Colllege
- doing away with gerrymandering
- closing the revolving door between corporations and gov't
Just to get started.

(19,326 posts)which perhaps is an appendage to #2 "verifiable voting"
AND
Automatic Voter Registration (that people CAN opt out of, if they so chose)
We just did this in Oregon, where when people get their state photo ID or Drivers License
this automatically symultainiously registers them to Vote in Oregon. So once this kicks
in, over time, we'll have virtually everyone registered to vote, so on election day people
aren't going, "oh shit, I forgot to register .. oh well maybe next year"
Also in Oregon we have mail-in ballots, which I like, because it side-steps having to make
election day a national holiday, as people can vote at their leisure, in private, meet with
others to share info, etc. while filling out ballot, and there are never prohibitively "long lines
in heavily Democratic/Liberal precincts".
Just a few thoughts. Thanks for your OP. Clean elections need to be a high priority
issue, until we get some or all of these ideas in place. We can't afford any more complacency
on this very important issue.

(18,791 posts)And I LOVE Oregon's mail in ballot process...started long after I left but helped my Mom with it for years. I even dropped off a couple for her in Beaverton, when time got short. It's fantastic.
