If HRC wins the nom. And we help get her to the WH....
Do you see a "Democratic Socialist" Party being formed from this movement or do you see the movement continuing to bring the party closer to popular demands.
Food for thought

(592 posts)If HC gets the nomination, I think you will see a Republican in the WH. It isn't because many Bernie supporters will refuse to support her, but that those that Bernie brought into the Party will likely take a pass.
As millennials and young first time voters move forward, another round of progressive voters will come into play. If HC does lose, the Dem party will begin to rethink Third Way policies that were "justified" back in the 1990's to take the WH. You will see a reversal of that and I am certain you will see an org like "The Democratic Socialist Way" pop up to promote lefter leaning candidates.
If it is not now (and I truly believe it is) with Bernie, it will be in 4 years. It is just a matter of time and it is a choice, does the Democratic party want to be irrelevant or truly progressive. If so, big money must go away. Bernie is showing that it is possible to run a viable campaign without those contributions. In that he has already won. If he wins the Presidency, he will break the stronghold over PACs on candidates and within a few years of his Presidency, Citizen's United will be overturned. (Next Pres appoints up to 3 SC Justices...let's MAKE sure they are liberal and not corporatists!)

(64 posts)As a matter of fact, if Bernie does not get the nomination, I will NOT be voting at all. Beat me up if you must but I'm tired of compromising MY VALUES.

(1,587 posts)I was so demoralized and beaten down, I couldn't see any point to voting, if all we got were Republican policies anyway. Our mid-terms here in NC were pathetic. My county couldn't even find someone to run against the current sheriff (R), who has been under investigation for years and likely will be indicted at some point. With all the shenanigans our dear governor is pulling, people still couldn't get off their asses and come out.
Now, I'm so optimistic, my kids think it's funny. I had a long talk with my middle son, who is a Rand Paul supporter (blame his father, not me), and even he says Bernie is the best candidate. I may have convinced him to vote for Bernie, rather than the Republican nominee, which is huge!
So, no matter what, get out. Vote down party, if that's all you can bring yourself to do. Write in Bernie's name, if he should not be the nominee, or vote Green. I think this is our moment to turn the tide, and we need every single vote. Yours, mine, the young people, people of color, everybody.
Together, we win.

(23,156 posts)and succeeds in winning the general election, it will be despite the enormous antipathy towards her, especially on the part of genuine progressive Democrats.
It might be possible that there would be an attempt to form another political party as you've suggested, but the two party system is so thoroughly entrenched that I don't really see it happening.
If, on the other hand, Bernie wins the nomination and the White House, it is slightly more possible that the Republican Party will be so shattered that it will more or less dissolve, and in that case it's slightly possible that a Democratic Socialist Party could come about with Bernie in the White House and as its head. However, I honestly doubt something like that will happen.

(6,409 posts)Many Democrats will insist that the party support more progressive legislation, progressive economic and social programs, etc. This will go on for the eight years of the Clinton presidency. At the end of that time, our party will nominate another third way candidate, and we will abandon ship. By that time, we will be even more of an irrelevant, minority party than we are now, and many of us will see no point is sticking around for more rightward movement. In the meantime, we will try like hell to the make our party a source of inspiration, but we don't control the money.

(64 posts)I have also said that it is time for a "Democratic Socialists of America Party". (Named for the website that should be required reading for all before voting in this primary)

By the way, I really wish Bernie would answer when asked "What is...?" with what this site says in the way of EXCELLENT explanation.

Should the worst happen, I'd be looking at both options that you've placed on the table.
