Like most of the top candidates, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has a long history of speaking out against big corporations, factory farming, and the Biotech giants. As early as 1994 he was fighting against companies such as Monsanto using chemicals that impact human and animal health.
He was also one of the few senators that introduced the Farm Bill that would require labeling of any genetically engineered ingredients in food.
Unlike another candidate running on the democratic platform Hilary Clinton who fully supports GMOs, Sanders believes that the biotech companies are transforming our agricultural system in a bad way. He says that he stands for the right of the people to know what is in our food (through mandatory GMO labeling that he helped pass in Vermont, an effort that the GMO giants are trying to block through the DARK Act) and supports family-owned and organic agriculture.
During a private dinner event on December 27th, Sanders spoke about how to make sure our food is healthy and our farming is ethical, as well as other big issues that his campaign stands for.

(5,122 posts)Why would voters choose Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton?
Food is a good reason for Democrats and Republicans to abscond from their "politics as usual" party loyalties and vote for Bernie Sanders, the 38-year Independent running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic primary. This article deals with both candidates' positions on two issues that relate to the food we eat - GMOs and the Trans Pacific Partnership.
Hillary Snip:
How is Hillary personally involved in supporting big agriculture? The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which gathers leaders to solve the world's problems, promotes Monsanto, the maker of RoundUp® and RoundUp Ready® seeds. Hugh Grant, Monsanto's Chairman and CEO spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in September, 2014. Ms. Clinton's top campaign advisor, Jerry Crawford, was a lobbyist for Monsanto for years and is now the political pro for her Super PAC, "Ready for Hillary." Clinton spoke in favor of the government's Feed the Future (FtF) program, a USAID funded, corporate-partnered program that brings RoundUp Ready® technology to the most vulnerable populations of the world. Monsanto and Dow Chemical support Hillary and Bill's 'Clinton Foundation' with generous donations.
Bernie Snip:
Senator Bernie Sanders represents Vermont, the first state in the nation to pass a "right to know" GMO labeling law. He authored an amendment to the 2013 farm bill that would have given states the ability to require labeling so that they don't have to fight for it, state by state, through propositions on the ballot. Sanders' amendment was defeated 71 to 27 in the Senate, even though 93 percent of Americans want GMOs labeled.
"An overwhelming majority of Americans favor GMO labeling but virtually all of the major biotech and food corporations in the country oppose it." says Sanders. Vermont's labeling law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2016. "The people of Vermont and the people of America have a right to know what's in the food that they eat," Sanders said.

(46,335 posts)The Huffington Post is notorious for running stories full of woo. In they are almost as bad as "Natural News" or "Newsmax."
We rightly ridicule Mike Huckabee for his selling a bogus "diabetes cure," but a vaguely leftist web site that touts bogus stuff like this?
"Oh that's different!"
And the the OP article is from a web site that is off the deep end, almost as bad as "Natural News."

Alliteratively adding, Sen. Sanders simply suggests support for family farming, and not for factory farming.
(He also states support for other things like food labeling, farmer's markets and organic farming when possible, but such lists seldom fit into an alliterative form.)

(46,335 posts)Farming is a business.
There is nothing "mystical" or "traditional" about it, inefficient farmers go out of business.
One of the biggest reasons for the "farm crisis" of the 1980's was farm equipment salespeople were overselling "the latest thing."
They still do.
Organic farms are a PR invention.
There can be, and should be a limit on factory farms, particularly livestock.
Here in WI hog farms like in the South, are not allowed.
On the way to my Mom's house in northern WI, I pass by a quite large dairy farm, with barns that look more like warehouses.
And that farm is prospering.
Meanwhile I see on the way up there older family farms, where the buildings are literally falling down.

And there's the reality that family farmers are being hurt by the ridiculous non-GMO marketing nonsense.

(4,610 posts)All these sites, when they aren't hating GMOs, are writing about chemtrails, aliens, coffee enema cancer cures, and alkalizing your body. And when you look at the citations on these sites, its all circular. It never leads back to any actual research. Just woo articles citing woo articles. I woke up thanks to sites like that. I no longer fear my food.
