Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders path to the White House has been incredibly narrow but, after his near-draw in Iowa on Monday night, theres clearly open road ahead of him.
On Tuesday, the race in which pundits long-ago declared Hillary Clinton the presumptive victor will begin in earnest; sit tight, its going to be a very long, bumpy ride.
The margin between Sanders and Clinton was razor thin all of Monday night certainly thinner than anyone would have imagined possible last spring, when he was down by 42 points in a national poll. Coming in anywhere close to Clinton in the Iowa caucus wouldve been a significant victory for Sanders; the near-tie showed the deep resonance of his message.
The actual results underscored what he and his supporters have said all along: establishment Democrats have underestimated him and the power of his movement.
The chief argument against Sanders for his entire campaign is that hes unelectable in a national election and, by extension, ineffective as a candidate or a statesman. Hes alternately been written off as a fringe candidate, an adorable elderly relative and more subtly, as a political tool for pushing Clinton the left.
But Monday night proved that he could win and, in proving it, hes weakened Clinton by exposing her as something other than the inevitable candidate we had all but assumed her to be. Some Sanders staffers have argued Sanders definitely did win if you count raw totals and not state delegates; given the geographical layout of Iowa, that claim is likely if unproven. (More than a quarter of Sanders supporters come from just three counties which awards only 12% of delegates; the caucus structure is thought to favor Clinton significantly).
Numbers aside, by sheer momentum Iowa was a win for Sanders and thats how progressive groups were framing it before the race was called. Democracy for Americas Charles Chamberlain which had endorsed Sanders weeks ago was calling the nights results are a huge win for Bernie and a major upset for Clinton before Sanders even took the stage.

(10,497 posts)The problem now is the really negative attacks will begin. This may help Bernie since we donate every time a cheap shot is directed Bernie's way!
Hillary, should she win, will go back to the Right. All of the tacking to the left to beat Bernie will be erased and she will be full on conservative in the General.
Bernie is fighting to restore Representative Democracy which we have not had in 40 years. Big Donors are who Washington represents, not the people. That is why we have such a huge gap in income inequality. The rich have the laws they want written and enforced. The ones they don't like are changed or not enforced. That is why every regulatory agency is headed by people from the industries they are supposed to regulate. The agencies have no money to do their job if they wanted to.
We will get Bernie's message out and he will win!

(3,343 posts)and more importantly it illustrates how even the foreign press has to now acknowledge and give time to Sanders... a major loss for Hillary

Clinton supporters can claim that 'only Bernie supporters will talk about ties', and that everyone else will just see 'Clinton wins Iowa', but the world is watching, just as they did in 2008, and know that inevitability just isn't inevitable.

(14,733 posts)Jubilation over the fact that Hillary won on coin tosses and sending some of their people to count for O'Malley, when a month ago, Hillary was still up by 30 points in the polls. She should have EASILY won Iowa, but now there is desperate celebration over winning on the luck of a few coins. This is going to run the full marathon, and long before Clinton gets near the finish line, she's going to have exhausted the pool of people who can or will contribute to her campaign itself, and rely exclusively on SuperPac superdonations from her corporate buddies to sustain her.
