Louisiana Coroner Claims Woman Died From "THC Overdose"

A Louisiana coroner reports that a 39-year-old woman who died in February on her couch in the town of LaPlace could have suffered a marijuana overdose. Though there is some cause for skepticism over the finding, its accuracy would make hers the first reported case of death caused by marijuana in the world.

“At high levels, marijuana can cause respiratory depression, which means a decrease in breathing,” St. John the Baptist coroner Christy Montegut told a local CBS affiliate. “And if it’s a high enough level it can make you stop breathing.”

His announcement that the woman died from marijuana is startling because it is generally seen as one of the world’s safest recreational drugs. A 2017 study by the Global Drug Survey found that 0.6 percent of cannabis users reported having gone to the emergency room due to its use. For comparison, 1.3 percent of alcohol users had gone to the ER.

Officials learned from the woman’s boyfriend that she had gone to the emergency room for treatment of a chest infection three weeks prior to her death, and that she was a regular vaper. Montegut seemed to imply that these two facts could have interacted to cause the woman’s death. She was found to have 8.4 nanograms of THC per milliliter in her blood at her time of death.

The La Place resident’s case presented several challenges to investigators hoping to determine her cause of death. Her organs, including lungs, were found to be reasonably healthy, leading officials to expect the death to be due to alcohol poisoning. But autopsy reports show that it wasn’t alcohol, but THC that was present in the woman’s blood at elevated levels.

this woman’s weed might’ve been laced with some kind of an opiate, like Fentynal, maybe? I believe a further, more exhaustive, autopsy is in order.

Besides, Nicotine is extremely addictive... Weed is not. And Cannabis is now being used for Cancer. Glaucoma also..and for many other ailments...

It said the lady had been vaping extensively. Most of those liquids contain nicotine. Is there another point you wished to make?

in Cannabis unless you PUT nicotine in Cannabis. Some people have mixed tobacco with Cannabis, that's called a Blunt...but they roll their own stuff. A Nicotine Jewel has no Cannabis in it. There are however vapes where you buy Cannabis oil jewels to put in a vape. Frankly I don't trust vapes after hearing about a kid, who died from one blowing up in his face. The Battery exploded.

It is nothing short of ABSURD that any CORONER is an ELECTED position in 2019.

Thank you to John Oliver for revealing what a hodgepodge the justice system is trusted upon in many parts of the country.

As someone who vapes...I want to know what the hell it was that killed her: THC overdose?! BULLSHIT!!

I'm not much older than the woman who died. Is it the THC, or was it another drug?,... perhaps the one prescribed was made by one of the pharmaceutical companies that bought the coroner thousands of dollars of lunch in the past few years. Was it possibly prescribed by one of the doctors from the general practioner's office the coroner's office is located in? Just google or duckduckgo the coroner, Christy Montegut.

(Will be the basis of one of the first OPs that I post. Seriously insane is the coroner 'system'.)

Apologies, but screaming via text is apropos in this situation.

I have seen it in action. A man dies on the OR table from massive trauma after being hit by a truck while changing a flat tire on the side of the road. Yes, he was a very large man. The surgeon listed the cause of death as obesity. And yeah, I asked him why. He said "because if the fat MFer could have moved in time the truck wouldn't have hit him." I REALLY hope the ME disagreed and changed that, but knowing the lazy ME in Tulsa CO, he just passed on doing an autopsy at all and went with it.
