It's the original Hannibal Lecter film based on Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, which pretty much kicked-off all of the "FBI profiler" films that followed. And it came out the year after To Live and Die in L.A. which was another great neo-noir with William Petersen.

The climax is unforgettable, and with the soundtrack featuring In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly made it just awesome.
