Greenwald and Friends Add Two Journalists to News Venture/Dan Froomkin&Liliana Segura

(Some might remember Dan Froomkin's good work when he wrote his Blog for WaPo back during the worst of Bush II years. He was excellent and then got canned. He moved to HuffPost when it started (recruited by Ariana) to be the Washington Bureau Editor. He wrote a column there...but, it got harder and harder to find. I always felt he was marginalized at Huff Post because his writings were very toned down from his WaPo Blog days. This is a very good sign for the new venture. Dan Froomkin had great insight into the political situation in DC and he he had a great sense of wit in his "connecting the dots" in complicated political situations.)

The new journalism enterprise funded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and helmed by Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras has two new employees.

In a post on the Omidyar Group website, Greenwald announced that Dan Froomkin, formerly of The Huffington Post and The Washington Post, will be joining the venture. He’s a vet of Washington politics and a natural choice to help Greenwald flesh out the crew. Also hopping on board is Liliana Segura, who comes from The Nation and, before that, AlterNet. Segura has a focus on justice and prisons and is the second journalist to be pulled from the ranks of The Nation, where Jeremy Scahill has been national security correspondent.

Greenwald’s crew so far reflects his passion for justice, world affairs and political news. We have yet to see hires who might help the new organization’s stated intention of reaching a broader audience with sports and entertainment coverage. Of course, Greenwald and Omidyar are only getting started.

Omidyar reportedly committed up to $250 million to the venture, which is temporarily titled NewCo until a name can be chosen.
