Fire at gun enthusiast's O.C. home caused ammunition to explode

By MATT HAMILTON
June 17, 2015

Rounds of ammunition exploded Wednesday as flames tore through a Yorba Linda home for more than hour, gutting the two-story residence and damaging nearby homes, authorities said.

----

Before more than 90 firefighters arrived, a plume of thick black smoke rose up and the heat caused several rounds of homemade ammunition to burst. Loud pops could be heard through the affluent neighborhood, Concialdi said.

The homeowner, a man in his 60s, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. He kept primer and gunpowder in his garage, which he used to reload ammunition of various sizes. Also in the garage were nearly 200 vintage guitars and amplifiers, some of which were damaged by the flames, Concialdi said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to the scene to safely remove the ammunition and gunpowder after the fire was knocked down about 3 p.m.

I don't know why he had nearly 200 vintage guitars and amplifiers when all he played was Ted Nugent. Enthusiast Jun 2015 #2

Reminds me of something happened recently, I found a full metal jacket (fmj) bullet on the ground while hiking in the woods.
First thought it was just a shell casing as I noticed the familiar brass - brown color, then picked it up & said to myself, what's this thing sticking out of it? what is it a twig got caught in the shell casing? a dead caterpillar or something? Then suddenly neck jerk, I realized it was live ammo.
About 2 inches long & weighty for a bullet, dunno what but I think a bit bigger caliber than a 0.223 (the ar15 bullet which is essentially a 22 caliber but with 10 times the kinetic energy of a 22 caliber rimfire bullet for the usual 22 pistol or rifle).
The id marks on the end were quite unreadable, blurred out corroded due weathering no doubt, but I suspect a hunter lost one, I suppose happens all the time.

So I thought to myself what to do? I had never found live ammo before, tho I've handled it. So I stuck it in my pocket, briefly, then quickly realized that was not the best way to carry it, what with coins & keys in the pocket which might strike the firing cap, up close next to the leg a possible way it could inflict mucho damage, much safer not against the body.
So I gingerly put it in my backpack wrapped in a sweater & pointy end away from myself. Took it to the cops.
Waiting for my 'Citizen of the Month' medal (nyuck).

So be aware of what to do when finding live ammo. Eddie eagle's advice for children is not what adults should do, I think it incumbent on us to pick it up & take it to cops, or dispose of it safely, or even save it & use it if it's compatible with your guns.
Any proper ideas on what to do with live ammo?
