Congressional report on gun violence in U.S.

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/default/article/Congressional-report-on-gun-violence-in-U-S-5583036.php

More Americans have been killed by guns in the past 50 years than in all of the wars the country has ever fought -- including the Continental Army's victory over the British in 1781.

Black men aged 15-24 are 16 times more likely to die of gunshot wounds than non-Hispanic whites. While only 20 percent of gunshot victims are women, the vast majority of them are killed by current or former romantic partners.

"More than 30,000 Americans lose their lives to gun violence every year, and 70,000 ... are injured,'' Murray wrote. "These alarming statistics have not moved those members of Congress influenced by the gun lobby to support stronger gun laws.''

This article has been posted elsewhere on DU, but it deserves wider coverage. U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-IL who wrote the first Congressional report on gun violence, has suggested that we approach gun violence as both a mental health issue, and a public health issue.

Po Murray, vice chairman of the Newtown Action Alliance states, "More than 30,000 Americans lose their lives to gun violence every year, and 70,000 ... are injured. These alarming statistics have not moved those members of Congress influenced by the gun lobby to support stronger gun laws."

Join a gun control organization today and help Robin Kelly, Gabby Giffords, and all of the other tireless opponents of gun violence, to reverse the damage done to this country by the right-wing gun lobby and Second Amendment absolutists.
