Gun Control and the Second Amendment

There are a few threads bouncing around DU today that claim nothing can be done about gun control because of the sacred Second Amendment. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There is absolutely nothing in the Second Amendment, nor any of its SCOTUS interpretations that restrict the banning, or severe regulation of certain weapons, accessories, or ammunition. The only obstacle to enacting and enforcing Canadian-style gun control is opposition from the powerful right-wing gun lobby (NRA/ILA/GOA/ALEC/Koch Brothers), and the political influence they are able to purchase (from both political parties unfortunately).

The bottom line is that the Second Amendment, along with its current interpretation(s) is just fine, and in no way prohibits the strict regulation of lethal weapons in this country. The right-wing gun nuts are the only obstacle to making our citizenry, especially the children, safe from obscene gun violence in this country.

All we need is to marginalize the gun lobby, and grow some political courage.

We've all seen pictures of the troops in Viet Nam. Now we've seen pictures of the ambush and the kids withdrawing and stepping over their dead and wounded classmates.

Our fascination with weapons of war/terrorism in civilian hands doesn't work.

Your one right (questionable) does NOT trump the right of others who hate or see no practical use, except for hunting.
