Former Japan Official: “Unstoppable contamination of Pacific Ocean… is seriously menacing US West Coast” — “Fukushima now undeniably a global security issue… can’t be brought under control by single state” — Experts: Wave of radiation will be 10 times more than entire world’s nuclear tests combined

Published: December 2nd, 2015 at 7:05 am ET By ENENews

Mitsuhei Murata, former Japanese Ambassador to Switzerland, Nov 1, 2015:

The lack of the sense of crisis over Fukushima is in stark contrast to the gravity of the crisis. Fukushima is now undeniably a global security issue. The unstoppable contamination of the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere with ionizing radiation from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear reactors is seriously menacing the West Coast of the United States. Japan should make utmost efforts to cope with the Fukushima crisis by retreating from the Tokyo Olympic Games that disseminate the false impression that Fukushima is under control.

Deteriorating situation in Fukushima — Japan is laboring under the consequences of the Accident never before experienced by humanity, including the simultaneous destruction and meltdown of three commercial nuclear reactors. Four and half years after the 3.11 disaster, it has been shown that a severe nuclear accident cannot be brought under control by a single state… It is questioned if Japan is in possession of the governability and the capacity needed to cope with the impending crisis. The melted cores of the reactors from Units 1, 2 and 3 remain inaccessible… If the molten nuclear fuel rods are exposed through cracks to the atmosphere due to a mega earthquake or the liquidization of soils on the site that could cause the collapse and breach of Fukushima’s spent fuel pools, Japan’s landmass would become uninhabitable to a large extent… The whole of Japan is threatened by the worsening situation emanating from the molten fuel rods, which continue to widely disseminate large amounts of dangerous radionuclides into the sea and atmosphere. Limitless steam observed evokes the possibility of re-criticality at the site. The undeniable necessity for international verification of the suspected re-criticality at the site should bring about the indispensable international cooperation to cope effectively with the Accident. The ongoing radioactive contamination of the sea with no prospect for a solution is dishonoring Japan, causing it to be criticized for harming the global environment. In spite of all this, attempts are shamefully being made to hide Fukushima…

there's tons of information on the ongoing disaster.

And with the shape the world is in, we're going to have to deal with multiple crisis on an hourly basis. That's just the way it is.

Fukushima was the first nuclear plant to be designed, constructed and run in conjunction with General Electric, Boise, and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).[3]

. . . .

The reactors for Units 1, 2, and 6 were supplied by General Electric, those for Units 3 and 5 by Toshiba, and Unit 4 by Hitachi. All six reactors were designed by General Electric.[5][6] Architectural design for General Electric's units was done by Ebasco. All construction was done by Kajima.[7] Since September 2010, Unit 3 has been fueled by a small fraction (6%)[8] of plutonium containing mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel, rather than the low enriched uranium (LEU) used in the other reactors.[9][10] Units 1–5 were built with Mark I type (light bulb torus) containment structures.[11][12] The Mark I containment structure was slightly increased in volume by Japanese engineers.[13] Unit 6 has a Mark II type (over/under) containment structure.[11][12][14]

. . . .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_Daiichi_Nuclear_Power_Plant

Besides, this article in the OP is not about the effects of the plant breakdown in Japan, but on its effects here where I am, on the US West Coast.

So we are very much and very directly involved. The cancer treatments and deaths will take place here on the US West Coast.

Nuclear energy is a curse. It is far too dangerous for us to be using. I would favor closing all nuclear plants if that were economically viable at all.

What effects our environment should concern ALL of us. ESPECIALLY a nuclear meltdown of this scale.
Remember, there is no Plan(et) B, when it comes to our environment.

...the blog seems to belong to Mitsuhei Murata, former Japanese Ambassador to Switzerland.

(albeit, as claimed on an internet source)

However, in the big picture, I believe the fundamental arguments (explicit or implicit) from the article are valid:
1) We are in the dark as to what is actually happening post 3/11
2) The magnitude of the problem is being understated and/or systematically ignored
3) It is a global problem that no single nation can effectively remediate or even stabilize

The data tends to support your third point, but the first two don't really pan out. There are any number of sources keeping tabs on the fallout (ouch) from the disaster, from government to universities to well-intentioned bloggers and such. If a person wants to know about the impact of the meltdown, he or she can find relatively unbiased sources as well as people screaming in panicked ignorance.

As far as the magnitude of the problem, it seems to be pretty clear, with actual experts weighing in. The world will have to deal with the consequences for generations. The problem is there are numerous Chicken Littles running around convinced that Fukushima is going to sterilize the Pacific Ocean, cause mutations in California and precipitate the end of life on the planet.

The data simply does not support that level of response.

...I could see my item #2 being successfully refuted, but not #1 or #3.

We really do not know what is happening, hydrogeologically, between the contaminated groundwater and the ocean.
Consequently, we do not have a good understanding of the dose the ocean is (and will be) receiving and thus what the long term effects will be.

As far as #2 goes, it would be better in my mind to "over react" now, in regards to immediate remedial measures, and pay that cost, than take the risk that it really is worse than we have come to understand, so far, and not implement any IRMs.

The old risk balance between "pay me now" or "pay me more, later".

They have absolutely no scientific credibility. They do nothing but fear monger about Fukushima. Their claims have been clearly debunked over and over again. They cite dubious sources.

Dear god. We need to get this right. Making shit up does not help. Promoting panic based on made up shit does not help either.

Of course, this has all been explained many times here.

And yes, Fukushima is a clusterfuck. But one should at least follow what the actual science says.

But the science says that radiation of the scale being released from the destroyed reactors will cause untold death wherever it goes.

It is going into the pacific ocean and has been found off the west coast of north America.

And news reports of dead and dieing sea life off the coast keeps growing everyday.

People need to take heed and plan a response. It is evident the government is hiding the facts so it will be a personal decision as to what one's response should be.

ENEnews.com is a treasure chest of good science and Truth. It would be wise for anyone who does not have their head in the sand to read ENEnews.
