Good day to you. I am new here - but old: 54 years this summer. I have been an engineer, a cruising sailor, and a school teacher. Now I live off-grid on a coffee farm in the Dominican Republic. My Dad raised me to be a bleeding heart liberal and it has stuck. I am glad to be here.
I want to learn more about economics and how our world can accommodate an approaching technological "singularity". I am thinking the time to make big changes in world governments is at hand while the people still have some economic power to demand changes. We do not want an "Elysium" outcome (except if we get it I plan to join the elites - no offense, I hope). Anyway, I am here mainly for economic speculation. Let's chat!

We have been in Mexico since October and loving it. Plan to spend this winter exploring the Sea of Cortez.
We are a bit older than you and have our eyes open for the next step. Living off the grid somewhere in Central America is definitely topping the list.
Check out the Frugal and Energy Efficient Group for others who are living simply or off the grid.
greetings, we departed St Pete in April 2001 and went Isla Mujeres, MX; Belize; Rio Dulce, Guate.; Honduras; Panama - there in mid-2002 we accepted teaching jobs in Maracaibo, VZ; so beat up the Colombia coast and worked a couple of years - then three years back and forth between Cartagena, Colombia and San Blas, Panama; then Curacao, Puerto Rico, USVI (two more years of teaching), then PR again and here. Now, as I mentioned before I think, the boat is WAY high and dry on our coffee farm; never to sail again. It was a great ride. We're glad to share more info. My email is cade.johnson.iii(a)gmail.com. Always glad to chat and relate hair-raising adventures. We liked MX and BZ and Bay Islands of Honduras and Colombia for possible retirement destinations, but the Dominican Republic finally gained the top spot - it is HIGHLY subjective! Panama, in particular, was too expensive; and Belize was TOO laid back believe it or not. Colombia still has too many inter-city-travel issues IMHO. Bay Islands were nice but expensive, and Honduras overall is fairly violent (like Guatemala). DR is no cake-walk, and corrupt, but big and relatively easy to get off the radar, and cheap living.
I am in Frugal and Energy Efficient too. Thanks.
We never made it to MX west coast, how are you liking it? As you go south, beware the Tuanapec!

(146,218 posts)Sounds like you have had such a great series of travels.
We have loved both the baja (spent most of time in La Paz) and the mainland (mainly La Cruz and areas around there). We plan to spend this winter exploring the Sea of Cortez, then probably head down the coast. We are completely unsure where we will end up, but would like to get to the other side at some point.
Thanks for the warning about the Tuanapec. We haven't even started to research the trip heading south, but we will be doing so over the next year.
