Time to say hello

Believe it or not, I've been a member of DU since 2002 -- the early days when we were all reeling from the installation of W into office and the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Over those years, I always enjoyed the top 10 list (still miss it) and the occasional update to the hate mailbag. It was always good to know I wasn't alone in how I felt.

I live in a fairly red state (IN), have a 15-month old daughter and I'm fortunate to have a good job and co-own a small business. (I probably work too much). My wife lost her job as a teacher a couple years ago (don't get me started on all that) and it helps to have the side business.

As far as DU goes, I'm probably best described as a consummate lurker--I use DU for a source of news, humor, and a good dose of sanity. Many people echo my own thoughts so I tend to remain quiet. This year has been different for me, though. I presume in part because it's an election year--I've been involved in many bitter debates with people I know and consider (or used to consider) close friends. They've ranged from the HHS mandate, abortion issues, the PPACA (I refuse to call it Obamacare) and Koch puppet Scott Walker, among others. In the aftermath and near loss of people I've considered friends for over a decade I found myself wondering if it was worth it to speak up. My conclusion is yes as my weariness at seeing the utter tripe and misinformation hit critical mass. I simply can't remain quiet anymore: I've gotten more vocal and I'm hoping to do the same here.

So, hello!

I think it's always great when a "consummate lurker" decides to jump in. We've got lots of lurkers here, and it would be great to meet more of you!

Feels good to be among like-minded friends, doesn't it! DU's the place to be.

I still try to be respectful of other views as I certainly don't hold out the expectation everyone thinks the way I do. It's disheartening and..well, downright maddening when you see so many people thinking/voting against their own best interests for whatever reason--misinformation, ignorance, etc.

Recently though...I've found it's hard to argue with someone--or even try to establish some middle ground when they are not arguing from some position of fact. That's when it's nice to have a place to go.

A DUer recently posted a picture of a wingnut's protest sign that actually said, 'Don't Take Away My Medicare to Pay For Socialized Medicine'.

You have good reason to speak up and help make a difference! You have two special ladies in your world and one needs all the help she can get (being only 15 months old and all).

Like I said when I sent my recent donation to Senator Stabenow's campaign, "I don't want my daughter living in a country where the likes of Pete Hoekstra are elected Senator."

No one/nothing can motivate you like looking out for your babies, no matter how old they get (mine are 20 & 23).

Cheers! Enjoy!

Julie
