Sophie Scholl, a white rose (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943)

"How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"

I hope I would do the same in that position, but I can't be sure I wouldn't just try to make myself invisible.

People like this let me understand what "awe" means.

The entire White Rose Society did what they knew needed to be done while knowing the consequences.
How many of us would give our life to try and stop the suffering of others?

The movie about her was excellent. She was human; she didn't want to die. But she died with grace and dignity in the midst of unspeakable crimes against humanity.

in a conservative neighborhood here, back in '08. he had had some really disturbing experiences that i heard about from local sources. i stopped and knocked on his door, and we had a great talk, and discovered we had many mutual friends.
he admired the things i was doing at the time, and surprised me a few days later with a gift of a small drawing of a white rose. we discussed what it meant, which i did know. (thanks to a former du'er)
it was probably one of the nicest things anybody ever said about me.
that little dwg hangs just inside my front door still.

...blessings in the world and things that lift our spirits.
sometimes we stumble across them.
sometimes we search far and wide before finding them.
sometimes they find us.
sometimes we just need to need them.
