Harriet Tubman, on this day in 1853...

...started the underground railroad.

Despite the best efforts of the slaveholders, Tubman was never captured, and neither were the fugitives she guided. Years later, she told an audience: "I was conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can't say – I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger."

I saw the statues to the Underground Railroad on "Riverwalk" I believe it was. It was very moving to me. A book about Harriet Tubman was probably the first biography I ever read, that and "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" made a profound impact on my life and how I view others.

(Detroit by the by, broke my heart, and I hope with the people who live and love there that the city comes as far back as possible)

...several times. It will take some serious long range planning and lots of civic minded folks but I hope for the same.
