So this morning I get this email inviting me to a "Women in Quality" seminar. (For people with careers as quality managers, inspectors, auditors, etc.)
Their marketing pitch?
So...network...enjoy a great meal...listen to 4 speakers...it's all goooooood! (note verbal emphasis on "good" doesn't quite come out as strong in print).
"You shop for bargains...right?"
If they're going to talk down to "women in quality" like that in the marketing of the seminar, why would I think they are going to give me any useful advice that will help my career as a "woman in quality"?
But hey!!!! If I register now I save $10!!! Cause I love bargains and shopping and shit like that!!!
Fucking A, and with the Martha Stewart "all goooooooooood" on the end.
Newsflash: It's not cute, it's fucking insulting.
I will probably also write to them to tell them how insipid their marketing effort is. (Because complaining on DU doesn't really accomplish much other than give me a place to vent.)

I own a 1990 Mazda extended cab pickup. I only drive it when I need to haul something because I am so tired of men walking up to me and insisting that I need to sell it to them. When I politely tell them it is not for sell they argue with me. It is the weirdest thing.
One day at Home Depot a man was so insistent that I let him buy it that he followed me when I headed home. After about 3 miles he was still following so I just pulled into the driveway of a neighbor - a female Sheriff. Her patrol car was at home so he finally drove on. I have a friend who also has a small pickup and she has the same experience all of the time but it is her only vehicle so she has no choice but to put up with it. We have joked about putting signs in the back window "THIS TRUCK IS NOT FOR SALE. CALL 911 FOR DETAILS".

(14,531 posts)But I am laughing over this. Nor because of what you said, but because of what I would reply in the same situation.
Ok, for (state at least 5,000) over book value, I will.
If they were stupid enough to take the offer, I would laugh all the way to the bank.
If not then I would simply state that they seem so intent that I sell this truck, they should be willing to pay anything for it. I mean, isn't it your goal to relieve poor little ole me from the burden of driving this manly truck? Get outta my way, I've got some mudding to do.
I think those guys goal is whether they realize it or not is that women shouldn't be driving trucks and they are hoping that if you will sell it, since you are a woman you won't know the value and rip you off.
I love sports cars. I always get asked what size motor my car has, V8 or V6, horse power. I love the looks I get when someone is looking at my car and I walk up to it to get in. LOL

(7,237 posts)It is an unusual truck? Are the relatively rare?
I have a hankering for an old Ford F150 beater truck in the worst possible way. Just a utility truck to kick around in, haul mulch and building supplies and such.

Every woman should own a truck imo. Go for it.
PS. I apologize for the length of that link - I don't know how to do the short version. That is not actually my truck but looks exactly like mine.

(11,411 posts)I feel like I am treated as a professional in my company and would accept no less in an outside networking event. No woman deserves to be lessened professionally, but I would say that is especially true in our line of work where professional competence and credibility is everything.

(7,237 posts)I am in a male dominated industry and *most* folks are pretty cool. There are a few misogynist jackasses, but I guess you'll have that anywhere. It was definitely worse when I was working in the same industry in I.T... Quality seems more woman-friendly.
It just floored me that this "professional" organization (this is sponsored by a local ASQ chapter for heaven's sake) resorted to this lame-ass marketing ploy.
