Hattie Elizabeth Alexander (April 5, 1901 – June 24, 1968)

Dr. Hattie Alexander was a pediatrician and microbiology researcher. She developed the first effective serum to combat infant influenzal meningitis, thereby virtually eliminating mortality from the once-fatal disease. She also was one of the first researchers to note and study resistance to antibiotics.

She was a pioneer in researching DNA and the process by which genetic mutation allows bacteria to become immune to antibiotics.

She lived with her companion, Dr. Elizabeth Ufford, in Port Washington, N.Y
