History of Feminism
Related: About this forumI've hit the Trifecta! My dentist, my doctor and now even my priest are all women.....
How wonderful to have lived in such a time! Ten years ago as an HIV patient I was assigned a young Asian female dentist at the state medical university. She's fabulous and takes care of me wonderfully and I'd fight to keep her. A few years later I was lucky enough to find myself with a female GP. Her warmth and openness allows me to talk to her about things I could never force myself to bring up to a male doctor. I consider myself lucky to have both of them in my life.
Last year our small town Episcopal priest retired. We're deep in the heart of Dixie but he was a solid leftist and I was really depressed. No one could possibly take his place. No one, that is, until our small parish got its first female priest. She today has become a true joy in my life.
Next week I turn 59. I wasn't even AWARE of the Womens Movement until the early '70's and then, in my ignorance I dismissed it until a close feminst friend educated me. However bad things may look from day to day, women have come a long, long way in the last 40 years. Not far enough certainly, but a long, long way. May the journey continue without delay.
And take some pleasure in the knowledge that a baby girl born today will never know the awful prejudice her grandmothers faced in 1972.

(4,031 posts)He feels much more comfortable with them. We have moved recently, to another state, and he's very comfortable with women doctors. I've always sought out female doctors....although I've had a few good male ones too. As a two time cancer survivor, I have had both, but I'm more comfortable with the female drs. They pay attention!

a breath of fresh air.
about a year ago, looking for another doctor i realized. i do not want t aman. i have had men doctors all my life. and i jsut do not want that any more. i want someone that can identify with my health issues. and why was i programmed to only be getting men doctors.
i havent gotten one yet, lol. i need to. but, i meant something to me that i realized that.
i appreciate your post.

I'm really happy with all three. My dentist has very small hands and is very conscious of pain. I can literaly talk to my doctor about ANYTHING and she listens and responds. I've never had that experience with a male doctor-I'm sure there are some, I've just never been lucky enough to meet one. And our new priest immediately honed in on something I enjoy (baking) and is utilizing my abilities. She's a very shrewd judge of personality.
Again, thanks.

(998 posts)Imagine a world with ALL women health providers, starting at the beginning. (well, there were but most of them were burned as witches)
I honestly believe that preventive *medicine would be the primary focus, instead of what there is now.

(63,221 posts)They take the time to listen and be present when you are with them unlike so many male doctors I have had in the past. Female doctors are so much better in my opinion. They just care more and don't get offended when you ask them questions.

Seriously though, interacting with many women medical professionals is the new normal for most of us, and it's about time.
