7 Ways Women and Girls Are Stereotyped, Sexualized, and Underrepresented on Screen

http://m.motherjones.com/media/2012/11/geena-davis-institute-women-girls-are-stereotyped-sexualized-hollywood

t's no big revelation that women and minority actors have long struggled to land prominent roles in big-budget Hollywood fare. And entertainment and media's oversexualization of women (even in Olympics coverage) has always been pretty damn bald-faced.

But how about kids' TV shows, or family movies?

What about the near total lack of roles of women inventors and business starts?

I started noticing weird waves of under-representation, back around the mid eighties. Admittedly, my sampling isn't the best, as I usually read, instead of stare at the tube. (It's probably unamerican to admit that...)

Female sport pilots, but no for-hire/mercenary pilots
2 female mechanics, but no contractors/gadgeteers
no female inventors and no female start-ups

LOTS of teachers/principals/psychologists. LOTS of social workers and a few police officers. NO female undercovers, except in "tension" thrillers. 3 hackers (usually in the "hot hacker chick" role).

Being distrustful of the media, I sense a pattern...

Like the guy on the Costco billboards, or the guy in the Miller Highlife ads, etc.

Go all the way back to Jackie Gleason or Fred Flintstone, or WC Fields. For some reason, audiences think fat guys are funny...

OR- maybe the corporations are trying normalize unhealthy body types for males?

I think most men want to see fat guys so that they think they are in shape, or at least average, and they like to see thin fit women for obvious reasons.

Also-I'm wondering if more fat guys watch sitcoms, beer commercials, etc. TV than do feminists???

walking away with the good looking woman is the privilege and entitlement our men are taught.

They just stand there either freaking out or needing the male hero to save them. If there's a woman that's capable, she's almost always a bad guy.

The male movie execs must find the concept of a woman who can do stuff for herself threatening.

She plays a competent action heroine all the time. Even The Expendables 2 had a very competent female team member.
