(31,464 posts)In addition to this stuff, they/she do the "Howard Huge" and another comic which appear(ed) in Parade Magazine. Bunny Hoest is a wonderful woman. Her husband's old studio is still exactly as it was from decades ago. Don't just a book, blah blah blah...Bill Hoest knew that to be successful you had to DIVERSIFY! I think he was a brilliant cartoonist, and standing at his drawing board was almost like a pilgrimage, like one of you football fans getting to hold Vince Lombardi's balls. Or something like that.

(31,464 posts)It is a CARTOON. It is promoting NOTHING. You don't know what is going on in the woman's mind. It isn't a script, it's a cartoon, and people will interpret it different ways. I know your posts well, and you tend to see rape in a lot of things that have nothing to do with the subject.
My point is, I know the Hoest's, and the majority of Bill's work was always very family-friendly. He wasn't an evil rapist, he was a cartoonist trying to make a living by working for different markets.
If you want to explore the issue more deeply, look at it this way; unlike today, when college kids have group gropes in their dorms and post them online, a three-way was still pretty exotic back when this ancient cartoon came out. Do you believe Ad Med still represents the current culture? And why do you single out the tamest of all "men's" magazine for your rape diatribe? How about the hotel chains and the cable companies? Instead, you pick on a dead cartoonist, and a barely-surviving soft-core girly mag. No matter how many times you post it here on DU, I would guess pornography isn't going to go away.

(14,274 posts)Many remember the Playboy scandal in 2000 as a pivotal point in the attention
given to domestic violence as a social issue in Romania. In the April issue of the
magazine, domestic violence was portrayed as being acceptable and the norm in
Romania. Subsequently, large public demonstrations organized by womens groups
and supported by Cosmopolitan magazine to combat the Playboy messages took
place in Revolution Square in Bucharest. Under pressure from the NGO and
Cosmopolitan-organized protests, Playboy publicly apologized and donated U.S.
$10,000 to two recognized NGOs working to assist the victims of violence.

(91 posts)And you would be suprised that a lot of women like that kind of humor. At least judging from previous girlfriends of mine who where even nastier then i am. Of course rape is no jokin matter, but cartoons like these are not responsible for any rape just like some cartoons about Mohammed were not responsible for riots in the middle east. The reason for both are lying way deeper in society. Like threating women like second class citizens when it comes to equal pay, reproductive rights and so on. I doubt that any one saw this cartoon and said to himself: "Ok, now i can rape someone because the cartoon joked about it".

(110,159 posts)of course you cannot back off the fact that fox conditions their watchers. but, you certainly can that the constant misogyny against women, reinforcing the conditioning of women being inferior nowhere near compares to fox news.

(31,464 posts)BTW, I did NOT alert on this. I don't alert on anybody. I'm just saying, if you want to discuss feminism, doesn't the subject, by its very nature, involve men? I'm simply offering a man's perspective, and I know you'll think it sounds cliché, but I am very much 100% a feminist. I've done work for NOW and NARAL, and I have a wife and a granddaughter, and I do resent being labeled just as much as you do. But I'm open-minded enough to understand that not EVERYTHING one dislikes has an evil undertone. Nothing in your post is "PROMOTING" anything -- certainly not in the context in which you've displayed it. I can walk through a book store and post a thousand titles which seem to "PROMOTE" something, but are actually just suggestive titles.
AnotherMcIntosh
(11,064 posts)(1) I did not post the OP. There is no reason for you to say, "Nothing in your post is 'PROMOTING' anything -- certainly not in the context in which you've displayed it." The OP is not my post.
(2) You also say, "if you want to discuss feminism ..." I don't. I may with my wife who is a feminist, but there is no way that I want to "discuss feminism" on a web site. Excuse me for observing it and giving my opinion, but imho there are just too many irrational, hateful, and I-want-to-tell-you-that-I-was-a-victim types to engage in any type of meaningful discussion. It is clear, at least to me, that any attempted participation by a male in a feminist-discussion group is not only un-welcomed but it is like going to a vegetarian-discussion group and saying that you are a meat eater.
(3) You say, "I don't like the fact that men are not allowed to post about feminist issues." You are allowed. But if you do so, no matter what you say, you can expect some negative consequences.
Quite frankly, there are times when I don't know why any of the women put up with us. I'm glad that some are attracted to us. But to me, that is still somewhat of a mystery.

(42,014 posts)I've found your posts to be reasonable, if we disagree it doesn't have to be a pissing match. I like to talk to men about feminism. I do have to express puzzlement over so much participation over a playboy thread.

Feel free to disagree. My feelings don't get hurt. Perhaps well find some common ground
Atman
(31,464 posts)I guess that's all I'm saying. Be reasonable. There are nude women carved into friezes on ancient ruins...and nude men, too.
I will be the first to stand up against a "rape culture." But I don't see a rape CULTURE. It is absurd to say we have a rape CULTURE. Rape is considered violent crime in our culture.
Some bad people rape. Some bad people rob banks. And I can show you many magazine cartoons and movies about bank robbery, but that does not mean we have a "bank robber culture."
Now, I'm sure a first reaction to the above paragraph, for some, will be "HOW DARE YOU EQUATE RAPE TO ROBBERY!!!" But I'm not equating the two -- I'm saying that just because BOTH are crimes and yet both are written about and filmed about, it doesn't mean everything written about or filmed about constitutes our "culture."
ismnotwasm

(91 posts)Here in Germany we have a new generation of feminists who embrace pornography and prostitution. One of there leading figures is Charlotte Roche and her book Wetlands. One of the biggest bestseller of the year 2008 here in Germany. Fictious story about a teenage girl that discovers her body and erverything that has to do with body fluids like keeping her boyfriends sperm under her fingernails so can eat it even days later. Do I really have to mention that the book wasn't that succesfull in the USA. Here in Germany the book
was the topic number one and mostly celebrated in left leaning magazines and newspapers. But we have a different mentality when it comes sexuality. People are not forced to resign when they have affairs, no rules against dating on the job are allowed and so on.
The oldschool feminists of course didn't liked that but time has passed them by.

The proposed legislation has ruffled the feathers of zoophilia advocates such as Michael Kiok, who told the German newspaper die Tageszeitung that "mere morals have no place in law."
The group Veterinarians Against Zoophilia told Europe Online Magazine that thousands of Germans exchange information online about sex with animals and that some farms rent out animals for sexual exploitation.
The new law would ban these so-called "animal brothels" and also make it illegal to train animals for sex with humans.
