History of Feminism
Related: About this forum"We live in a culture that condones and celebrates rape.
Within a phallocentric, patriarchal state, the rape of women by men is a ritual that daily perpetuates and maintains sexist oppression and exploitation. We cannot hope to transform rape culture without committing ourselves fully to resisting and eradicating patriarchy.
- bell hooks, in Transforming Rape Culture, chapter ten: Seduced by Violence No More
Fighting rape culture isn't about 'reclaiming' words. It's about fighting the underlying forces that perpetuate sexualized violence and the idea that women's bodies are public property.

(110,159 posts)and yet, we pretend that it doesnt effect us.
we will claim watching fox news has this massive effect of dumbing down people. but, continually being fed the rape of women to titillate and entertain the masses has no effect.

(110,159 posts)Three white high school students in Waverly, New York, performed a satirical re-enactment of Chris Browns infamous beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna, in blackface, at a pep rally in front of students, parents, community leaders, and the media.
The act has decried as racist by former students of the high school, and some have questioned the judgment of the school administrators who allowed such a show to be performed. Their students were participating in a competition to be crowned Mr. Waverly.
According to CNN, former Waverly High School student Vlad Chituc said, I think its unconscionable that such blatant racism has been tacitly approved two years in a row.
not a mention of misogyny for our children to consume. violence toward women as entertainment. racist, ya. but women.... meh. we have had a real good dose of that on du the last couple days.
no, it does not help when we teach our girls young.

(36,516 posts)To think that anyone would consider that entertainment, & then to not even have the violence against a woman even questioned, just the blackface.
In that book "An Unnatural Order" he explains the hierarchy. Men of the tribe are at the top, women of the tribe are next, then children, then the undesirable humans, then animals. However, if a tribe finds an ally tribe that they get along with & work with, the men of the ally tribe now trump the women of the tribe. I look at modern culture & I see it still.
It makes me wonder if Hillary Clinton had won the presidency, how much different would her treatment have been than Obama's, from both the extremists & the media. For every "angry black man" moment he had to avoid, she would have had the "that time of the month" moments to avoid - even at her age.

(110,159 posts)i was going to say, how i see it today. and sure enough, i follow to your next sentence.
yes.
the om of australia dealt with that recently.
kinda an up in the air thing. on the one hand she challenged the sexism and misogyny. and on the other hand, i think she was probably protecting the misogynist of the emails for political reasons, even though she was probably offended. i would have thought more of her if she was consistent. but then, we probably would not have heard that speech. and it was awesome.

(115,103 posts)Not sure what happened with the reading group here, but I'd say that would be an excellent suggestion for a feminist reading list. Then again maybe it wasn't supposed to be a reading group for feminist works... I don't know.

I ordered this book too. Got a "used in good condition" copy for 15¢ plus shipping!

(115,103 posts)Maybe we could have just a generic 'feminist book discussion' thread where anyone who was reading whatever could jump in whenever...
Of course I have zero experience with reading groups, so I really have no idea... but I would love to see my fellow HoF group members' perspectives on these things and discuss our different interpretations and thoughts about them.

(17,656 posts)They are trying to change the legal definiton of rape so that they can commit rape, but will not be charged with rape.
That's what the stupid comment that Akin made was all about.
"Forcible rape" as compared to rape.
So, they can start a discussion talking about "Just what is rape?" like they don't have a clue.
I think Mitt screwed himself but good last night with women voters by making his tremendously stupid comment about asking for "a binder of women" while he was Governor.
Today the woman that was at the head of that group that gave Mitt that list of qualified women that he could appoint while he was Governor, straightened that mess out quite a bit.
Of course, Mitt lied about the entire episode about how it originated and what he did about it.
But, it looks to me like some other GOP Representatives or GOP Senators are willing to hold discussions to redefine rape, and that is where we need to stop their stupid attempt to redefine rape in its tracks.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)some girls rape easily.
they have been working hard to redefine rape. fbi changing their definition to be more inclusive, actually count more of the rapes really really bother some groups of men.
i have learned a lot since the binders comment and a day to process what mitt was actually saying. the reality. he received resumes. how hard would it have been to make these women actually professional with the word resumes. no binders were involved. could he say he recieved a binder of african americans? a binder of jews?
just really the basic dismissal of women as non beings.
and the a few of the cavalier dismissal of women in some of these jokes, to diss romneys dismissal of women.
huge wow.
double slap upside the head.

(115,103 posts)It's good that, as sea mentioned, the FBI is moving forward by using a more progressive definition of rape.
However as we get closer to removing the societal idea that women's bodies are public property, this backlash will only get worse.
CrispyQ
(36,516 posts)It is very scary as a woman to see what is going on. Rape without a black eye or gunshot wound, it isn't really rape. Eventually this will lead to taking away our right to vote. And when they do that, they will work on taking away minorities right to vote & eventually it will be like 1776 when only white, male property owners could vote. It's what a good number of men want. They are so immersed in the patriarchy that they can't see anything else or those that do fear it so badly they crush the idea of a different system.
MadrasT
(7,237 posts)That in New Jersey women (unmarried property owning women - women who were "heads of household" could vote up until 1807?
I just learned that recently, I had no idea.
They took women's suffrage away in New Jersey in 1807 using claims of "voter fraud" (sound familiar?) -- among other things, they said men were dressing up as women so they could vote twice.
