2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPoll: 20% of Democrats say they'd cross sides and vote Trump if Clinton vs Trump in GE.
Nearly 20 percent of likely Democratic voters say they'd cross sides and vote for Trump, while a small number, or 14 percent, of Republicans claim they'd vote for Clinton. When those groups were further broken down, a far higher percentage of the crossover Democrats contend they are "100 percent sure" of switching than the Republicans.

(12,655 posts)but its hard to reconcile the same people who identify as dems to vote for tRump. i could see someone going for a third party candidate, but trump?
hard to take seriously, unless the antiestablishment vibe is waaaaaaay worse than it appears, and it appears to be quite intense.

(3,411 posts)This is the second election cycle since 2008 where political revolution has been popular among many of the voters. This should be a blaring siren to the elites that revolution is inevitable unless politics fundamentally changes in America to be responsive to voters.

(3,900 posts)I can't imagine that anyone who would cross party lines to vote for Donald Trump if Hillary is the nominee would ever consider voting for Bernie Sanders, either.
While to many of us, he is not establishment, to the kind of people that Trump is appealing to, he is the epitome of establishment - a career politician who has spent his entire adult life in politics. One of the things they love about Trump is that he is not a politician - a true political outsider, in their mind.
This may not be logical, but these people are not logical

(955 posts)even won a presidential election? LBJ, maybe? Feels like a technicality though since he was already President when he won, so it was more like a reelection. Was Obama establishment, even though he ran as an outsider? Clinton wasn't when he won, though the Clintons have become the establishment since. Maybe Al Gore, though he was never sworn in.

(11,573 posts)Obama had moved steadily up the political ranks from community to state to federal. He had the backing of Ted Kennedy and the Daley organization. You don't get more establishment than that.
Clinton and Carter were the exceptions, both derided as rednecks and bumblers. That was and remains a really stupid underestimation of both men.
You said it. Where are we going so fast and why am I in this handbasket?

If as people say, Hillary is third way center right same as repuke why would they need to cross over to Trump? <<<-----was true; why vote for a puke? So which Dems are crossing over and why? I didn't see that bit of info in this stirring piece of news.
So I call bullshit.
edited to add: or is this poll saying that self proclaimed progressives wanting a revolution would help put the likes of Trump in the White House? A racists, homophobic, misogynistic turd? Now, that can't possibly be true, could it?
Nah, I will read the comments here on DU and see those progressives denouncing such a thing. I mean staying home on election day is one thing, but crossing over to vote for trump--surely that will be condemned. right?
Or this poll is bullshit?
before anyone throws it out--asking you **not** to cross over for Trump is not a purity pledge.

(99,711 posts)A poster in another thread said President Obama won in 2008 without Clinton voters. I told him that was preposterous. 83% of Clinton voters voted for PBO in 08. It's just math. Hillary had 20,000, 000 votes in the 08 primary. PBO won by 9,500,000.

(51,004 posts)dial-test of Trump's first big campaign ad among 916 self-proclaimed likely voters"
I have no idea what that even means. Is an online questionnaire an internet poll? And how do you do a dial test in conjunction with an online questionnaire? And how does a dial test of a Trump ad tell you whether Democrats will or won't vote for Hillary?
Not buying this one.

(17,399 posts)These are obviously not...Hillary supporters. No other candidate but Sanders has meaningful levels of support...ergo the Democrats that support Trump in this poll must be predominantly Sanders supporters.

(11,785 posts)After all, a lot of them were hoping Warren would run--and would be happy to see her as VP. The other VP suggestion most commonly floated among Sanders supporters is another woman, Barbara Lee.
As for the Clintons, Bernie supporters don't like their closeness to Wall Street. The last thing they'd do is turn around and vote for Trump. They might vote third party, or write in a candidate, or leave the top spot on the ballot blank, but I don't see any Dems who support Bernie now opting for Trump.
tritsofme
(17,399 posts)The way the math works out, it only makes sense that it is predominantly Sanders people indicating they would support Trump over Hillary.
I agree this is an unlikely ultimate outcome, and posited in my first post that it is hopefully just a sour grapes sort of petulant response to being confronted with defeat.

(36,418 posts)Doubt if anywhere near that many would vote GOP, but if she's the nominee Hillary will likely lose the General. Democratic turnout is going to be low and Independents are distrustful and aren't likely to break for her. That's a recipe for disaster.

(7,143 posts)But this one's nearly as ridiculous as Overtime Politics:
1) Mercury Dynamics, founded in October of last year, is not a polling firm. They do "market research".
2) This is not a poll in any traditional sense. It is, according to their press release, a "survey and ad 'dial-test' of Trumps first campaign spot". The "survey", from which the results were supposedly obtained, was done online. The "Dial test" is one of those gimmicks which ostensibly shows the "real-time reactions" of participants watching something - in this case, a Donald Trump campaign ad.
3) As with the laughable Overtime Politics, this company provides only one metric for this survey: the total number of participants. No info as to who the participants were, how they were chosen (or chose) to participate and, of course, absolutely no demographic data whatsoever.
4) Caveat emptor: This is an advertisement for a fledgling company. Do not be duped.
