Looks like the MSM, in the face of becoming politically expendable, has canceled The Big Ignore

I believe the media thought if it just ignored Bernie Sanders, his campaign would wither away. He could not compete with Hillary Clinton without media coverage, so s l o w l y he would go away ... down ... and out.

But go away he did not. He wagered if he just played his cards well by sending out his message via alternative media, many would hear and line up to support him. Surprisingly enough, the line to do so grew so huge THE BIG IGNORE could no longer survive. The broadcast and print media gradually began to realize that while in the past they could make or break a candidacy, today a candidate is demonstrating the MSM's words and cameras are in fact expendable.

The MSM is no longer a political king- or queen-maker.

Lightning bolts struck when the MSM realized it could no longer ignore that object in its rear view mirror which kept getting BIGGER and BIGGER. Suddenly cameras are returning to capture the man upon whom the MSM had tried to force sudden political death. He had lived to fight another day! And another! Numbers climbed to startling heights.

Death by media dehydration had not killed the candidate's revolutionary run. It had made apparent success could be achieved with or without the MSM. Rather than become a dinosaur in a political cemetery, the MSM reconnoitered its position and came out in the open to stay in the game. Lights, cameras and action for Bernie Sanders are starting to happen. Why?

Because rather than go away, he lived to fight another day, and in so doing, won a striking victory over The Big Ignore.

Sam

Postscript: It is well past time Martin O'Malley be given his fair share of a place in the sun. Certainly, many of the Republicans are highlighted, even those most assume will be dropping out of the race soon. Martin O'Malley is an outstanding politician with a wonderful record of achievements. He too has been victimized by The Big Ignore.

You know Comcast made a statement that it did not want any commentators who were anti-TPP. I am sure you know many involved with the media helped draft that piece of legislation, so NBC/Comcast were not going to offer free time for politicians campaigning against it to have a platform.

The preference for Hillary to win, the ad money, protecting the TPP -- these three things greatly shape what they do when, I believe. They have also developed that "I shall control the reporting" mindset Rupert Murdock has.

mention the Koch Brothers funding elections. I thought MSNBC would edit that out of the Morning Joe Video when I went there later to post the link here. They left it in. But then, Morning Joe's ratings have been tanking so maybe they needed a bounce and leaving in the Koch Bros. comment in was worth the price to get hits on website for the interview they did with Bernie which might get Bernie supporters checking them out and giving ratings bounce for the ratings bounce.

I read that their show now has a Fox News Business guy in charge since they expanded to three hours. I think he started Jan 1. I already thought "Morning Joe" was like a Fox Show....so I don't know if they can get any worse.

Many of the downsides of life here I attribute to the Republicans. But over the last few years, the Third-Wayers creeping into the Democratic party has also adversely impacted.

We could retrieve a lot of what we used to have if Sanders wins. I watched him on the Ed Show as well, but before that Keith Olbermann had Bernie on a lot. That is when I became very familiar with his positions on issues. I used to think, "I wish he would run for President, but he probably would not want the stress of the job at this stage of his life." I like living abroad but it's expensive and can be isolating when you don't know the local language. Fortunately, Basel is cosmopolitan and you can hear several languages on the trams into town. They are just smart here about education and manufacturing and giving you multiple choices of parties to elect. They had an election in October and there were at least 5 different parties and platforms. We get a local newspaper delivered to our mail box twice a week (FOR FREE) and they had a special newspaper one week beforehand that listed all of the candidates and their platforms. That's democracy to me!

During the first debate, Hillary Clinton exclaimed "Senator Sanders voted against the Brady Bill." Well, no he didn't because he was not a Senator when the bill was offered up. He was a member of the House. Sanders voted for the will of the people in Vermont for whom he was representing.

Vermont had extremely little crime, and many of its residents hunt. During that whole year, there were only 7 murders in the whole state. He has become more of a champion for common sense gun laws while a Senator. I believe the NRA has given him a D- rating.

Senators in theory vote for what is in the best interest of the entire state, while Congressional Representatives in theory vote for what their constituency want. And that is Bernie's record.

I did not watch the interview, but I will check it out tomorrow.

I believe the reason Hillary is polling nationally so far ahead of Bernie is because in areas where he has not yet campaigned, people don't even know his name. As the contest proceeds and he branches out to other states, he will attract a lot of support not now even readily identified. He didn't have the funds to start out campaigning nationally. He started slowly with the first two caucus states, and now is preparing for Super Tuesday. In the meantime, I guess we a smaller version of The Big Ignore still in play where Republications/conservatives/corporatists do not want him to have any coverage.

It just seems he keeps getting stronger and stronger as his message spreads more and more. To read about people in Oklahoma really liking him makes my day.

Thanks for posting on my thread, madokie.

I'd noticed it too, over the last few weeks, and was about to open a thread.

Suddenly, Bernie seems to be getting maybe 2-3x the coverage he was before. Not that it's a lot, but it's a substantial increase.

And the articles no longer seem to be prefaced with the mandatory disclaimer, "Bernie has no chance of winning, but..."

It's more likely as a CYA move, rather than them actually caring, but yes, it seems it did survive, if not defeat, the media "brownout".

that just keeps getting bigger and bigger. No longer if it wants to remain relevant. However, this doesn't help O'Malley, and that is a tragedy.

To me anyway. Just had a discussion about this the other day with me wife. Here's the gist:
Doesn't matter if it's MTP, FTN, etc, etc. Doesn't matter if it's David Gregory, Wolf Blitzer, or Chuck fucking Turd (loath that man). A Republican can come on and say the sun is fucking purple and the first question asked will be "do you think President Obama is politicizing the color of the sun when he says it's yellow?" After that, we'll be told the jury's out, there's a debate, no one really knows what color the sun is. And then, heaven fucking forbid, a Democrat says the sun is orange or red because then it'll be "see? Both sides, both sides." Forget the fact that red, yellow, and orange are all colors associated with fire and purple isn't, it's all about both sides. Disgusting. Infuriating. And, most importantly damaging to a democracy. Like I said haven't been relevant to me for a long time.

P.s. great post

I always knew there was bias in the reporting of our networks, but the thing that really cinched it for me was Election 2000. General Electric owned NBC at that time, and that corporation donated 1.1 million dollars to George W. Bush*s campaign. The CEO sat on Meet the Press and totally ridiculed Al Gore to the Meet the Press audience. (Clinton/Gore had fined GE big time for violating the Clean Water Act and he was still pretty angry about it.) But that is where a lot of the humiliating things about Gore sprang (making fun of his wardrobe, he invented the Internet -- that kind of stuff). But the most outrageous aspect of NBC's corporate relationship with GE and its control over our elections became crystal clear the night of the actual election when the controversy over how to call the state of Florida was rocking back and forth from Gore to Bush, etc. until one phone call took place.

One of Bush's relatives, a young man who was something like a nephew (that type of relationship) was on air helping with the reporting. Jeb Bush actually got on the phone with him to discern the status of the the network's call. After some discussion, Bush told the younger relative to make the call for George W. Bush, and shortly thereafter it was a done deal. Once FOX called the race for Bush, the others soon followed suit. Once the state of Florida had officially been called for Bush, any challenge by Gore would have been attacked simply as that of a sore loser. To Gore's credit, that did not stop him.

It is simply beyond appalling the influence that goes on behind the scenes in our election process. It has been that way for years, I am sure, but just in recent time have we seen the evidence of the corruption flash before our eyes in undeniable form. If there is to be any confidence by the voters in the outcome of our elections, we must find a way to end the influence of corporations control over the results.

can't defeat Bernie (us).....and God knows how hard they tried...they laughed/mocked/ignored (us) went negative on his hair and his age and his "grumpiness" (but not is policies per se')....then how can anyone with a straight face say he (we) can't win against Big Money?
Money is only as powerful as we are willing to go along with what it buys.
If we ignore their money....then "we'll" get a hellava lot of it out if they get zip, zero....When the Oligarchs get Nothing back on their Billion Dollar Investment in their Bidding War to buy the WH, Congress and Supreme Court.

The thing that stands out and is Wonderfully Different - is that this is The Peoples Campaign. Not Bernies alone. He's always said that it's not about Him-This is about Us!

71. We must also understand
Fri Jan 8, 2016, 10:14 AM
Jan 2016

that the change we seek in the White House must be complimented by a new Congress and Senate and Governors and State Legislators and Mayors and City/County Commissioners.

But Most important of All (imo) WE, Must Be Willing To Go To Work As Co-Legislators At Every Level Of OUR Government.
Campaigning is long and hard. But the Real work begins After the election and that is Usually where "we" drop the ball.

Some folks can and will do better at the local level while others will soar in engaging DC. No matter where one feels most comfortable - We All must engage in Our own governance. If "it's" gonna work.

I suspect the MSM always thought there might be an opportunity to milk ad revenue from covering Sanders in early 2016. They just didn't count on his campaign doing so well, and thus they themselves looking so lacking in their assessment.

Might be a benefit for Sanders in that. Since the media of course didn't read things wrong, lol, it might be portrayed that the Sanders campaign has a special magic.

AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHY I AM VOTING FOR BERNIE SANDERS!

So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

I have been very interested in government and politics most of my life. I started watching Meet the Press religiously when I was 8 years old. I thought I pretty much knew the score but the startling theft of the 2000 election was simply amazing to me.

In the last 15 years, I have learned more about the corruption in our government, and especially our elections, than I could ever imagine. I have not exactly led a sheltered political life -- I was reading literature about Lyndon Johnson and how he stole he first Congressional election when I was 13 and got into a lot of hot water in my father's Republican House when he found me reading "The Ugly American" a little later on. All that taken into account, I still could not believe what I was seeing and hearing right out in the open during the 2000 election. I was stunned by the Supreme Court decision (it had zero Constitutional authority to step in) and offended by the stupidity it put forth in its rationale for stopping the recount.

I believe there are a lot of people who watch and react much more intently than ever before in our history. I do not believe there will be a lot of meek submission should any "irregularities" happen in this contest or the actual election.

Fri Jan 8, 2016, 03:19 AM

a presidential election was stolen in plain sight.

It really stunned me and made me look at everything completely differently. I realized I'd been completely naive, even though I used to be a big newspaper reader and thought of myself as being well informed.

I remember when I was a kid and I felt sorry for the Soviets because their media was just propaganda. Little did I know our big media would turn out to be not much better.

Occasionally I turn them on when something interesting happens, but that is very seldom. I think if they want to ignore being a responsible broadcaster which reports in a well-rounded, unbiased manner, I don't need to be exposed to their brainwashing. After all, I can read. And that is where I get most of my news today.

Shame on them.

77. As Jackson Browne says in Lives in the balance, "They sell us the president the same way"
Fri Jan 8, 2016, 02:10 PM
Jan 2016

(cont.) "they sell our clothes and our cars". A music Album pressed in 1986 that seems to be as relevant today as same as when it was made. It just goes to prove some of the artificial flavors might have changed but the meat and potatoes of how it gets sold has always been the same.

A little trick i have used when stuck in place where i being forced to listen the to spiel, is identifying what up front and hidden messages they are trying to use in the process. Often they try implicate one into the belief they will be inadequate unless they go along with program being sold. It's like a connection to a parent the viewer and listeners never had. Even in twilight years of the consumer being targeted, it still works for the advertiser just as always had (it turned into a bad habit long ago). People follow by instinct and have an aversion to trying to figure it out themselves.

This current conflict with Bernie with all the disconnect and avoiding Bernie will go on as long as corporate media feel they are in position moral superiority. (course that is just because they are also followers and imitating another archetype they are visioning of how things should be.

My only real advice, is be prepared for a long, long ride
