2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumManufactured Crises
Given the Libyan storming of the US Embassy and similar uprisings elsewhere, I really have to wonder whether the production of the video was intended as a 2012 "Swiftboat" against a resurgent Obama by people farther up the food chain than one indy film-maker. This feels remarkably well orchestrated - the "Israeli" film-maker who was nothing of the sort, the whisper campaign that this non-film was a blockbuster in the US, the urging of Romney's team for him to take a hostile tone in the wake of this ... (albeit that one blew up rather spectacularly). Certainly not easily proved, just curious if anyone else thought that this crisis seems manufactured.

(6,890 posts)It is pretty cheesy and funny in a Mel Brooks sort of way. Anyways, I am surprised how violently Muslims have reacted to a B Rated Movie, reminds of the Satanic Versus protest back in the day.

(2,391 posts)Like in the US when fundies don't read Harry Potter or watch some TV show their pastor rails against, yet they 'know' it's "evil and Satan's handiwork."

(6,890 posts)We pretty much had the same response when Salman Rushdie wrote The Satanic Versus.

(242 posts)There are factions that want total war in the Middle East, on both sides. From Israelis that want attack on Iran, to military contractors and their surrogates, to Islamic jihadists.
In the past few days, there has been widespread circulation of this anti-Islamic "movie" intended to enrage... the attacks on American consulates/embassies... reports of the U.S. Ambassador being sexually assaulted before his death... and tonight, recirculation of old rumors that Taliban leader Mullah Omar was killed.
These events all have the possibility of spurring escalation.
It wouldn't surprise me that some group is stirring the pot, hoping to push all sides into a growing conflict, with various leaks, news reports, etc. Almost impossible to prove, however.
