2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI get now why this is so familiar: supporting O'Malley is like being a Linux user
That's why my sighs on reading GD-P seem to come so naturally: it's the exact same feeling I get when I listen to Windows and Mac fans argue with each other. And "wait until Iowa" is just like how "2016 will finally be the year of the Linux desktop". Sigh.

(13,889 posts)Lots of Presidents failed on their first attempt at running for that office - it takes years to build a national profile, and O'Malley is not well known outside the northeast. He might get a cabinet post in the next Democratic administration, and meantime he can leverage his increased public profile into for a future run. I like his policies OK but not him at present, I find him too stiff and scripted. However I think that's inexperience and nerves in his first go at a national campaign so I'm sure he'll improve over time.

(11,833 posts)I also see it on gaming forums: pc versus xbox versus playstation.
I'm not saying all three democratic candidates are the same. They do differ somewhat on policy. But I am saying that O'Malley should get a lot more attention because he is concretely laying out outstanding policies. And that I'm always pretty incredulous by how much a lot of people really seem to enjoy fighting or backing themselves into crazy corners on the internet.
I've been watching him but haven't been saying anything...because he's not very forceful...but looking like a viable second choice

(131,067 posts)he's chastised.
Among his showings of force is that he's out, on the streets of Iowa and New Hampshire, constantly, meeting voters.
Example: O'Malley attracts intimate crowds amid snowstorm.
WEBSTER CITY, Ia. A handful of Iowans who drove through blowing snow to see Martin O'Malley got an intimate chance to talk over coffee about issues ranging from climate change to ISIS.
The former Maryland governor and Democratic presidential hopeful was the first candidate from either party to return to Iowa following the Christmas holiday, speaking to more than 100 people Sunday at the Des Moines Social Club about immigration and foreign policy. The crowds were smaller at Monday morning stops amid a winter storm that was expected to pile at least 8 inches of snow in swaths of the state.
O'Malley sat in the middle of five potential caucusgoers inside the 2nd Street Emporium in Webster City for what felt more like a dinner table conversation than a campaign event. He explained the management style he embraced as Baltimore's mayor and as a governor, and at one point asked the campaign's state director, Jake Oeth, to get his iPad from their vehicle so he could show a graphic around the table..'>>>

(869 posts)attracting people who don't post like the tea party of the left.... he may end up being the runner up instead of Bernie as Bernie is attracting supporters who post like Trump supporters....I mean I don't care....it's a turn off to majority of voters who turn to HRC or O'malley simply because Bernie's campaign is annoying ....not Bernie himself mind you.....

Both would much rather ignore that Bernie exists as well.

Lol, I use it, but many Classic Shell is a better comparison, as it's free.

(15,429 posts)Especially since Windows 10 is the best desktop operating system I've ever encountered. Ease of use will translate to widespread adoption relatively quickly when compared to prior versions of Windows.
You can take heart that OSX is a fully Posix compliant kernel with roots in the BSD world, though much of the kernel had to be written from the ground up by Apple in order to hold compliance with Apple drivers.
That said, I like Linux and use it as a desktop for certain applications, though that is pure geekery on my part.
I will always put Windows in front of my 76 year old mother, though I would give her a Mac if I though my brother was capable of supporting it.

(8,462 posts)Hillary is Windows.
Sanders is OS/2 Warp (a better Windows than Windows)
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)I would say Sanders is the people's candidate, thus GNU/Linux
Hillary is the rich person's OS, thus OSX
O'Malley is a little more working class but still establishment, thus Windows.
All the candidates are still currently supported, so none would be similar to BeOS or OS/2.

(34,183 posts)I hope he gets a decent appointment by the next Democratic president. He'll need to do something to stay relevant if HRC or Bernie occupies the Whitehouse for 8 years.
I wonder if he'll try for a Senate run in MD. Barbara Mikulski is supposed to retire. He could build a national presence that way.
I wish he wouldn't make such an enemy of gun rights supporters, but no one is perfect.

(11,175 posts)It's not completely accurate to say that "Barbara Mikulski is supposed to retire," as if there were doubt about. She's definitely announced she's not running for re-election.
As soon as she made that announcement, O'Malley, who worked for Mikulski in her first Senate campaign and then in her Senate office, was an obvious prospect to succeed her. There were definitely some people who thought he should abandon his long-shot Presidential campaign and run for the Senate. O'Malley disagreed. He publicly renounced any run for Mikulski's seat. Other people have gotten into the race, and I really doubt that O'Malley would cross them up by changing his mind now.

DanTex
(20,709 posts)Though I'll admit, I haven't really tried doing much with Libre, except for just creating spreadsheets for internal use, but even then I save them in excel format in case some non-linux person needs to see it. The thing is, MSOffice is the business standard, which means that to use Libre collaboratively you basically have to translate back and forth, and things get lost in translation.
LaTeX is great. Anything with equations, there's nothing remotely close.
