(32,342 posts)that the reason that several hundreds of years worth of white male Presidents didn't mean that they all got there because they just all had more superior qualities to Blacks or women, or etc.
I mean, there's a reason my husband and I joke "meritocracy!!1" whenever some other white dude or friend or relative of the boss gets hired or promoted.

(16,286 posts)in that they are everywhere, cough cough, would go INSANE if treated like this.
For instance the dipshit Woman who took her case to the SC which ended affirmative action because she couldn't compete.
Nope, white folks get preferrential treatment by god and if that stops said white folks will raise holy hell
"Fixated"... Lord.

(20,043 posts)Then how do you answer the next the next question--you know it's coming--were there no black people, women, hispanics, etc who made such contributions? None?
but then we'd be back to a country fixated on race and gender. See how that works? There is no white man's burden.

(108,990 posts)Not a single female President since 1789, women have only had the vote for 100 years, and only 20 women in the Senate -- but we're beyond all concerns about sexism now.
Everything's just hunky-dory.
Anyone who asks questions, like your daughter, is "fixated" on gender.

(24,324 posts)It is sickening that there has not been a female president in this country. There surely have been qualified people.
I just do not want this particular one to be the first.

(6,282 posts)The solution is to judge on character, issues, and record and let the chips fall where they may.
Certain people don't lile that though because their candidate comes up far short.

(2,074 posts)And really, after hundreds of years of slavery, black people should not be happy when a black man gets elected as president? And after millennia of gender oppression, women should not be happy at the possibility of a woman standing there on that stage?
The only ones fixated on race and gender are the ones who made sure that only white men have until recently occupied that stage.

(12,882 posts)We need some portraits of females on the row of presidents, and since we have a candidate with the appropriate "plumbing" to set things straight, we should abandon reason and record and elect us a lady president in the interest of making a point. Seems a shame we didn't fast-track dame Sarah for the highest office. We might well be on the verge of electing a Palin/Trump or Palin/Cruz ticket this time around. Then this young observer could feel that we'd set things Right. OH WAIT - WAIT - WAIT..... How about Ms. Fiorina? Wouldn't she qualify as well?
randome
(34,845 posts)Other than the fact that Sanders is not a Democrat, there is little difference between him and Clinton. To those who look at the overall picture, that is. With that in mind, yes, gender can and should be a determining factor. I have no problem voting for Clinton because of her gender because 99% of her positions on the issues are fine with me.
Fiorina? A poor attempt to obfuscate since her stated policies are...what's the word I'm looking for? Stupid.

(24,544 posts)all over this fairly innocent post with comments about "fixating on race", "going transgender" and how Hillary's only qualification is the proper "plumbing".
They'll be the ones hollering about how their "objection" to Hillary is based on "principles" and they don't "hate" her and then wondering with the widest of eyes why so many people feel that far too many Sanders supporters have deep, PROFOUND issues surrounding race, sexual orientation and gender.

(2,074 posts)I just sat there at the end of the movie, thinking of this man, and the things he saw, from the terrible things that happened to his family in the South, to the racism he continued to experience even as he worked at the White House, to finally seeing Barack Obama elected as president, towards the end of his life. (The film is based on a real person, Eugene Allen, who served as butler from the time of Eisenhower to the time of Reagan, and who died in 2010.) I choked up. Race does matter. It matters when one race has been enslaved, lynched, raped and abused by another race for centuries. When things finally change so much that someone who represents that race gets to sit in the seat of power, then race matters. Race is not a thing that matters by itself, of course. Herman Cain or Ben Carson could not have filled that seat in the same manner. But when you do have a candidate as competent as Obama who also represents a group of people that has seen far more than their fair share of misery, then the fact that he also represents a visible manifestation of a changing society, does matter.
Gender matters in the same manner. No, not any woman will do. Sarah Palin would not do; Carly Fiorina would not do. But when you do have a competent woman running for president, and if she does win, then that is a good thing.
Msanthrope, your daughter sounds like a smart kid. Good for her for noticing what so many are adamant to ignore. The fact is that the faces of this country's presidents are a visible manifestation of the oppression of African Americans, Native Americans, and many others, and of the systematic exclusion of women from public life.
msanthrope
(37,549 posts)They do.
You've explained it in a way I can't.....when you see no one like yourself in power, you think you are powerless.
