So here's what really happened.
Josh Uretsky was working for Hillary the whole time. He, DWS, and some collaborators at NGP VAN had set the system up so that he could access both campaigns' data, which he would do regularly in order to transfer Bernie's data over to the Hillary team.
What broke on that fateful day was not the firewall, but the hack that they had put in in order to keep all of Uretsky's activities out of the logs, in case of an audit. So for a few hours, Uretsky's accessing both sets of data made it into the logs, and some employees at NGP VAN noticed this.
DWS was notified, and which point she decided that the best defense is a good offense. Uretsky would take the fall, and she would try to paint Bernie as a data thief.
Meanwhile, over at Clinton HQ, panic is everywhere. Hillary didn't let her top advisors know the details of the plot, but they all know that something was crooked, and an investigation was out of the question. One of her aides took it upon himself to start planting stories in the media designed to make Bernie's campaign look bad.
The "Uretsky is a plant" story is part of this disinformation campaign. Problem is, the story was actually true, even though the Clinton aide who planted it didn't know that! He though it would make the Bernie campaign look like conspiracy nuts, but he inadvertently leaked the truth.
Needless to say, Clinton is planning on dropping out of the race on Monday. Sources say she was close to throwing in the towel even without this, because after she saw the last few facebook polls, her team knew there was no hope left.
So that's the story. She might have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for those meddling internet posters!
