Hillary Clinton supports New Orleans' FEMA settlement, touts infrastructure plan
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Thursday (Dec. 17) she supports the federal government's $2 billion settlement with New Orleans that will help fix the city's crumbling infrastructure.
Her campaign said she supports it because it will boost the city's economy and "help continue the city's recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina." She also used the agreement to tout her own infrastructure plan that she would promote as president, which she said was similar to the agreement the city reached with FEMA and announced on Dec. 10.
"Thanks in large part to the leadership of Mayor (Mitch) Landrieu, the city of New Orleans has secured critical funding to continue their recovery and support projects that will provide substantial benefits for its residents," Clinton said in a statement. "My infrastructure plan will support projects like these in not only New Orleans, but around the country, as well as invest in structures such as dams and levees to help prevent disasters like Katrina from happening in the first place."
According to Clinton's campaign, her infrastructure plan includes plans to modernize dams and levees, and said it was informed by New Orleans' experience during Hurricane Katrina.
