Federal union endorses Hillary Clinton for president

The largest federal employees union is making the case that Hillary Clinton is the right choice for 2016.

The American Federation of Government Employees announced its endorsement of Clinton Thursday after the candidate won in a national poll of its members “by nearly a 2-1 margin.”

“Secretary Clinton shares AFGE’s vision for a strong and vibrant government workforce that has the necessary tools and support needed to deliver vital programs and services to the American public,” AFGE National President J. David Cox said in a statement announcing the decision. “The American people count on government employees to keep their streets safe, deliver their Social Security checks on time, and care for our nation’s heroes at veterans’ hospitals, and AFGE can count on Hillary Clinton to help us get it done.”

AFGE’s endorsement of Clinton further cements her lead against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the race to win the votes of 2.7 million federal workers.

Getting people to hold off on endorsing in 2008 was one of Obama's best moves. He was aggressive at it. So much different this time around.

2. In 2008, unions were split vertically between Clinton and Obama.
Fri Dec 11, 2015, 08:33 AM
Dec 2015

This time, the split is horizontal: the union bosses hedge their bets with Clinton, the rank and file goes with Sanders. And this demonstrates the relevancy problem of many unions: they care more about ingratiating themselves with the establishment than they care about standing up to it.

Dec 2015

The polling apparently contacted thousands of people. They got a hold of 800 people (out of a potential 300,000 members and 670,000 federal workers that they represent). Of that 800, 424 said they would vote Democrat. Of those, 178 said they would vote Hillary. That is the "official" basis for this endorsement.

Here is an official statement:

The scientific polled used a sample size of 800 respondents, contacted via phone – the gold standard on which all national polls are conducted. To get results that reflected the makeup of our membership, we had to make thousands more calls. Of our representative membership sample, 53% of members said they would vote for the Democratic candidate and 27% said they would vote for the Republican candidate, while 26% said they would vote for either. Of those who chose a democratic candidate, 42% said they would vote for Hillary Clinton while Bernie Sanders garnered 25%, with the remainder spread across other candidates, ‘won’t vote,’ or ‘undecided.’

Of those who said they would vote for a republican candidate, 18% chose Ben Carson, while 17% chose Donald Trump, with the remainder spread across other candidates, ‘won’t vote,’ or ‘undecided.’

The entire National Executive Committee and many Council presidents personally met with both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. You can read that article here: https://www.afge.org/index.cfm?ContentID=6627

You can also find candidate questionnaires in the last issue of the Government Standard here: https://www.afge.org/index.cfm

Heh. So that's a whopping 178 votes for Clinton!

Whee! No wonder everone's dancing in the streets!

So, if this had been a survey of the entire membership, that would be a response rate of 0.27%. Oh, let's be generous and round up a little further to 0.3%.

Sanders is hugely popular among those who recognise his name and ideas. Clinton only with those who recognise no name but hers. Why do you think Debbie and her coronation committee do everything in their undeserved power to keep Sanders (and O'Malley) out of the spotlight?

It still leaves over a third of the union membership that goes with Sanders, simply because they know what he represents. And that number will go further up: his popularity and his name recognition have gone hand in hand all through this election cycle.

Poll Shows Hillary Clinton Maintaining Lead Over Bernie Sanders

Despite a month of sharpened attacks, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has failed to significantly dent Hillary Rodham Clinton’s lead in the Democratic presidential race, according to a New York Times/CBS News survey released on Thursday.

Mrs. Clinton has support from 52 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Mr. Sanders has backing from 33 percent, the poll found. In an early October CBS News poll, she led Mr. Sanders 56 percent to 32 percent.

Fri Dec 11, 2015, 10:18 AM
Dec 2015

Have you read the comment sections of the articles announcing this endorsement.

Two of the articles I read feature hundreds of comments who are furious and accusing the union of bamboozling them. Most commenters say that they are for Bernie and they are outraged at their union for endorsing Hillary.

Furthermore, they are all calling their union on the carpet and wanting to know exactly who was polled. Each respondent has said that they weren't polled and don't know anyone who was polled. Apparently, no one has yet to find a real union member was polled.

I only saw a couple of comment sections, but there were scads of comments and they were all saying the same thing. Will post links...

Thousands of comments---pages and pages just like this. This is from an article with 350 comments. Other articles have 1,500+ comments.

AFGE represents 670,000 workers in federal government, including those that work for District of Columbia government.
Endorsement -- which as first reported by Associated Press - is 18th national union endorsement for Clinton and will help Democratic front-runner's campaign argue that she has solidified national union movement around her candidacy, not that of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Clinton accepted endorsement in a statement on Thursday, pledging, as president, to "always stand up for workers' rights, fight to keep workers safe on job, and protect retirement security, including defined benefit plans and Social Security. "The largest union representing federal employees endorsed Hillary Clinton for president on Thursday, calling her a “a powerful ally in the ongoing fight to raise wages, create good jobs, expand benefits, and preserve workplace rights."
The American Federation of Government Employees said it interviewed Clinton and rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) before making the choice. A statement from the group did not mention the third Democrat in the race, former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley. No Republican candidates responded to the union’s questionnaire, the group said."

My wife's union AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees) which by the way is one of the the largest union in the country with about 670,000 employees about 5,000 employees from the District of Columbia, and a few hundred private sector employees many of them nurses like my wife have fully endorsed Hillary Clinton. Many of the nursing unions are pro ACA and want full fledge care for everyone. I'm glad they are supporting a Democrat, and though I'm no big Hillary Clinton supporter I'm glad how they broke the reasoning as to why.

Do you have that fact handy?

36. AFGE Polling instead of membership vote

It's true! I believe AFGE when they say they polled their members. They did NOT have a membership vote but instead relied on polling.

According to them, they polled 800 people out of a potential 300,000 members or 670,000 federal workers that they represent. Of that 800, 424 said they would vote Democrat. Of those, 178 said they would vote Hillary. 106 said they would vote for Bernie. Not exactly 2 to 1, but without a large enough rounding error one can say it is legitimate.

The bigger concern is that of 300,000 dues paying members, AFGE made an endorsement based on the polling of 800 members. They have yet to release their polling methodology. Did they just use landlines? Did they focus on early voting states or strongholds? How many local unions were actually contacted? Who made the decision to rely on polling over membership votes? We will see.

There official statement is below:

This comes through every time she is endorsed by a union. The members come out in full force, decrying the decision to endorse Hillary--that seems not to reflect the union membership.

Most union members appear to support Bernie.

The endorsement was made by the top brass and a few selected members who were "polled" in true Clinton PAC style.

Clinton will need the very votes she is dterminedly ignoring right now. This is the set-up for a GE disaster.

21. I just gotta ask.................................
Fri Dec 11, 2015, 11:32 AM

when was the "last " time that a federal union when on strike:

PATCO -----------------------------and look what that got them, even after they shot themselves in the proverbial foot---------------------and what's really classic they gave there endorsement to Reagan, knowing he was anti-union.

Can federal unions go on strike....................................

No, per 5 USC 7311, An individual may not accept or hold a position in the Government of the United States or the government of the District of Columbia if he- (1) advocates the overthrow of our constitutional form of government; (2) is a member of an organization that he knows advocates the overthrow of our constitutional form of government; (3) participates in a strike, or asserts the right to strike, against the Government of the United States or the government of the District of Columbia; or (4) is a member of an organization of employees of the Government of the United States or of individuals employed by the government of the District of Columbia that he knows asserts the right to strike against the Government of the United States or the government of the District of Columbia.

Added: Which is not to say, that federal employees cannot join labor organizations which advocate for their rights as employees. In most cases, IF it is ever necessary to display labor dissatisfaction, they can (and sometimes DO) engage in a "work-to-rule" action.

In my humble opinion.....................................
When has Clinton walked a picket line.................................as a union member I want to see the walk and the talk--------------King and Robert Kennedy did it and others ---------------I want to see her walk up to union members on a strike line and then present her remarks.

So far I have only seen one candidate do it this year -------------------one---------------- and his name is Bernie Sanders

until someone in position of power (like Sanders) walks that line, comes and talks while on that strike line, then you got my vote, that representation of at least showing that you are going to take political right wing anti-union hits for supporting the striker and the worker says it all, its show and tell time.

I support Bernie Sanders, I have given what I can to help his organization out.
When a organization has over 750,000 other human beings giving to the organization, and having NOT one super pac as of today, doing dirty work or having a plumbers outfit trying to take him down--------------------then I have his back

Thanks
