I just told my family on my dad's side on FB that we are related to

President Obama via one particular line among our common midwestern ancestors.

I await the fireworks, as at least a couple of cousins support Rmoney.

ETA: Our family lines diverged about 200 years ago.

I unfortunately don't know much of my family history, so it would be harder for me. All of my grandparents are gone now as is my father. I'm sure I could probably try to look at my grandfather's side as there were some (gasp, horror) Mormons. I recently found a very distant cousin on my mom's side after the death of my grandfather who knows a lot about that side of the family. I've never met him, but we've emailed back and forth a bit.

a family member who is a crack genealogist on my mom's side. That, plus Ancestry.com, was all it took. I was playing around looking up Obama's ancestors 3 or 4 years ago and came upon a common surname to both our trees that is uncommon enough and kind of unique to one swath of the south/midwest, and got suspicious. I confirmed that he belongs to the branch of that family that DIDN'T go west with the Mormons. Ours did.

With all the census available up through 1940, it's often not hard to find out a LOT of new stuff. I do it for my employees when things are slow at the office sometimes.

You can PM me if you want and I can sniff around today to see what I can fine.
