2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSanders, O'Malley and Clinton supporters: what do you enjoy when you're not on DU?
Do any of you volunteer or work for the campaigns? If so, that's great. I'm still undecided, so keep up the good work. I dedicate about half my work consulting for small companies on a sliding scale. For fun I volunteer at a horse shelter, helping feed & groom these great animals. We adopt horses out & the rest live safely in good health.
What do you love doing when you're not on DU? If you're retired or sick or disabled, please tell us what you enjoy. I want to include everyone reading here!

(28,749 posts)I make a decent wage, and work full time so that keeps me busy.
Otherwise I am watching a Patriots game, or volunteering for Hillary in NH, or just with family.
Pretty low key, single millenial guy here.
Soon I'll be skiing during almost all my free time, just waiting for a bit more snow.

(17,651 posts)I'm an artist.
I volunteer at our local cancer center (art therapy).
I help my daughter with her mobile dog grooming business (I'm the bather/dryer, run interference with pet parents, schedule, answer phone).
I bowl in league Monday nights and Wednesday mornings.
My daughter-in-law (to be) is expecting in June (file that under life changing event).
Still grieving my Mom's death, 2 years this past October (file that under life changing event).
Help hubby (retired) when he decides he wants to do a little job here and there (do all the paper work, etc.)
In between all that, I feel folks out and determine if they're ready to hear any politickin'. If not, I let them go. If so, I tell a little info on my preferred candidate.
Oh yea.....I'm an artist LOL

(11,833 posts)Art therapy, that truly helps people. Have you ever noticed that it's always the artists and musicians who lend a helping hand to others. They are among our first responders in times of crisis too. Flood, hurricane, disaster, whatever - artists & musicians lend a helping hand.
So sorry about your mom. Grieving takes so long. Glad to hear about your upcoming grand-child. Keep on bowling! Or, if anyone's interested, bowling for Bernie, lol.

(12,769 posts)Yes, art therapy really helps the patients and the caregivers in so many different ways. All the patients have nothing but praise for the program and enjoy the commardarie...it's also a fine way for patients and caregivers to communicate in ways words always fail to express.
I didn't know that about society's helper bees!! Wow!! Thanks for sharing that bit with me.
Grieving is.........like so many tell me, it takes time, we do it on our own terms and don't bash yourself for missing that loved one. It's all so true. Yes, the grand is going to provide a ton of entertainment - I can't wait for that window of my life to open!
Bowling for Bernie heeeheee - love it! I really do love bowling!!

Otherwise, I do labor organizing, social media for my union and some grassroots orgs, and every so often try to read a book.
I love watching The Knick, Man in the High Castle, Ash vs Evil Dead, and I can't wait until Star Wars. :0
And of course, I work as an adjunct, teaching ceramics. Students are great, work conditions suck. And so it goes...!
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)That's so amazing SM. Thank you for your labor organizing too. Oh, I'm going to check out Man in the High Castle. Looks freaky so I've gotta get in a good frame of mind for it. I finally finished binge watching Breaking Bad and I needed something lighter, so I'm watching all of Curb Your Enthusiasm on amazon. Hilarious show. Yeah, lots of people say that about teaching, the kids are cool but some of the other stuff sucks. I like ceramics & occasionally buy work from ceramicist friends. I've got a few of their mugs & coffee cups. Buy stuff from local artists everyone.

I volunteer for political campaigns and do some Mensa activities as well.

I'm gratified seeing the positive responses here. It sounds like an awful lot of DUers really do things that benefit those around them.

(56,582 posts)That, Judo, and Freemasonry are pretty much my creative and social outlets; I tried NaNoWriMo this month but I only got to about 32K words. OTOH all the household and personal stuff I did while procrastinating from writing was actually pretty cool.
I'm only in India for 10 more months (it's been a 3 year assignment) so I'm trying to get the kids I volunteer with as ready for the future as they can be. And these kids are ****ing whip-smart, as in, I've been programming Android apps for years and they're catching optimizations and tricks I had never thought of.

(20,453 posts)I must work, and after 40 years in the field of health care with a few more to go, I'm seeing the difficulty of where people are today versus when I was lucky enough to work my way through school WHILE working.
I've been a poll watcher for various candidates, including in 2000 Bill Bradley, then an activist until I won local public office. Five years after that, I've continued to stay active as an officer in a non-profit foundation for our local community.
I've been out there campaigning for Bernie most weekends doing the "one step at a time" approach of walking and talking. I find it easier to connect to people, even now. My physical health allows me to stay involved.
I enjoy lots of things related to an active lifestyle and putting my thoughts down on DU. I enjoy being a grandparent and having our family move closer to us this past year. I have a stake in the same goals, but seeing it now in a more mature role. Certainly, I want something for future generations. We owe them BIG TIME.

(16,861 posts)I've loved vinyl for years, there's just something soothing about the hiss of the needle on the record, and the sound that comes out always sounds so real to me. Bear with me a second while I go full on audiophile...I'm a big Springsteen fan and "Thunder Road" is one of my favorite songs. If you listen to the live version from Hammersmith Oden on CD, it sounds completely different than on vinyl. On Vinyl, you can clearly hear than Bruce is suffering from a cold/flu, which he was, the CD version is so clean you miss that. CD is great but you lose the highs and lows of the music due to digital space and compression, a great example of this is Jimi Hendrex "Are You Experienced", there's no comparison between vinyl and CD. Ok, I've gone full audiophile geek! Thanks for allowing the diversion!

(2,450 posts)I'm mostly sewing or crocheting. Or listening to Thom Hartmann and Sam Seder (Majority Report). I always have a creative project to do and the holidays are keeping me real busy this year. I got an early start the day after Halloween and I'm still not caught up.
I'm also trying new recipes and ideas in the kitchen when I can. Due to illness, I cannot stand or walk for long periods so my options tend to be limited - I am experimenting a lot with slow cooker meals and conversions to slow cooker meals. Thanksgiving stuffing in the slow cooker was ... not too bad. Not the same though.

(39,961 posts)I would be remiss for not stating this.
Soak them overnight, then drain them and proceed to cook them.
Kidney beans have a toxic shell that has to be purged before you can indulge in them. Soaking them, then cooking them to the proper consistency is how you get rid of the toxin. You can also speed up the soaking process by adding baking soda.
I find good recipes on youtube as well. Most definitely will add the celery & onions too. I have a rice cooker that I enjoy. Really easy to use and the rice is perfect every time.

(31,828 posts)Date back to 1949. Seriously. The record one was a few years ago in Cherry Hill - 1.6 million dollars.
We are trying to get wine/beer sold in restaurants. In my borough of 4500 where people live YEAR round - not a single one.
Wildwood - resort area - It makes me sick to put in writing but. . . they have WAY many more than they need.
Keep the traditional liquor license PRIVATE enterprise the same -
Let the state get into the beer/wine revenue game.
They literally are not sold by the state anymore and there's this huge rip to put the screws to the Horse Country Community.
If we don't get our way - swear to god I might go to jail next summer along with a few other residents.
We'll start 'pop wine/beer' private parties aka bars in our backyards just to thumb our nose and guv'nah dough boy.
