6 Things I Learned As A Feminist At A Bernie Sanders Rally

On a cold November afternoon a few days before Thanksgiving, I waited in line for two hours outside the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Ga., surrounded by a throng of young people excitedly chattering among themselves. Rather than waiting for a Taylor Swift concert or a locally beloved stand-up comic's set, though, we were all gathered for Bernie Sanders' rally in Atlanta, where I was just one of more than 4,000 attendees who turned out to see Sanders speak. I hardly expected a dark horse presidential candidate's campaign rally to draw such a crowd — especially when that candidate is a democratic socialist speaking in the deep South. Atlanta may be a progressive dot in a sea of Republican red, but surely it's not that progressive, right?

Wrong. Attendees came from all over the South, traveling from as far as Tennessee to as close as Georgia Tech's campus down the road. Unlike many of the supporters at the rally, however, I had yet to make up my mind regarding the Senator from Vermont. Call me shallow, but I just can't bear to give up on the idea of having a female POTUS, whether or not I wholeheartedly agree with Hilllary Clinton's policies. That being said, I was hardly going to turn down the opportunity to see Sanders speak in person. Let him try and win me over, I thought. I still like to think of myself as neutral, at least until the election draws closer, but there's no denying that Sanders is a feminist's dream come true — for reasons far beyond the fact that he publicly identifies as one, although that certainly helps.

My entire attitude toward the new generation has been changing. I watched over the summer as it was the younger crowd that was manning (and woman-ning) the local Moose Lodge and the other evacuation sites when the raging wild fires put so many Lake County CA residents in need of such services.

This is no small thing given that the weather was around 100 degrees or so during these time frames - hard to be out working and struggling in weather conditions when the lure of swimming pools and indoor, air conditioned video parlors was the alternative.

And good for Bernie that he can appeal to this group of voters. Blessings on him and on them.

"Call me shallow, but I just can't bear to give up on the idea of having a female POTUS, whether or not I wholeheartedly agree with Hillary Clinton's policies."

This is why Bernie needs exposure.

"...if women's rights are a deciding issue for you, Sanders is a candidate worth considering."

But, no mention of the fact that he would do his best to end the tragic loss of life our continual wars are responsible for? This should resonate for any mother or father, brother or sister.

This simple focus on sex of the POTUS is sexism at its worst. it leads in this case to the candidate less willing to protect our climate and in turn allow changes in that climate to kill so many around the globe. It leads to the candidate supporting the lowest minimum wage, a wage by itself that would keep parents away fro their own children as they continue to work more hours and more jobs. It leads to a candidate willing to let financial institutions destroy our financial stability as long as they can gamble with our money. It leads to a reduction in social security as their preferred candidate does not favor expanding it. It leads to an increasingly unaffordable ACA as big insurance firms exert more and more pressure on the Congress which now is in republican hands and eager to harvest the benefits from ACA mandatory coverage by increasing premiums and denying benefits.
It is a clear choice, a choice with meaning. To choose based on sex is as great an indictment of females as has been made in my lifetime. I think that females will decide based on other issues. I know I had a mother who loved her sons and I cannot believe otherwise for she taught me a lot about values.

to choose the candidate I think is best suited to hold the office of the President of this United States, regardless of that person's gender.

Yes, I would like to see a woman hold the highest office in our nation. However, the first woman President of this United States will have to merit that office by her accomplishments and by her commitment to all the peoples of this nation, NOT solely by virtue of her gender.

you've replied, I remember thinking, "someone is going to come along and aver "that's why I'm voting for Hillary." So, I'm not surprised. I know many Democrats who are supporting Hillary, many more who are supporting Senator Sanders.

For me, Senator Sanders has changed the political discourse in this nation, and has energized our younglings and given us hope. I will support him with the fervent desire to see him win our party's nomination--not because of his gender, but because of his integrity and his courage.

Go BERNIE!!!!!!

a women set to be our first woman president? As a strong, lifelong feminist -- not hardly!, although I wouldn't be commenting if this puff piece had been posted on the Bernie forum.

BTW, a crowd of 4000 from greater Atlanta's 5-1/2 million would not be impressive, and this crowd supposedly came from "all over the South." I'm presuming that's not really meant to cover the entire 100-million plus region, but even the adjacent states have over 50 million people. On the plus side, it is the South and 4000 did come...

Hillary Clinton has a lifetime record of fighting for women and children around the world. A fact that most of her detractors like to gloss over.
