2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDU being overwhelmingly for Sanders is meaningful to me.
I am happy and proud to be a longtime member of an internet community that stood strong when Bush stole the 2001 elections.
I am happy and proud to be a longtime member of an internet community that was nearly unanimously in opposition to the Iraq War and had the intelligence to know bullshit when it saw it.
I am happy and proud to be a longtime member of an internet community that supports Health Care as a RIGHT for everyone.
I am happy and proud to be a longtime member of an internet community that believes that a LIVING WAGE is the right of anyone working 40 hours a week.
I am happy and proud to be a longtime member of an internet community that overwhelmingly supports Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic candidate for POTUS in 2016.
DU is not a group of freaks, internet warriors or "hip kids". DU is a community of well-read, deeply moral and politically grounded people who represent the very best of what the Democratic Party is supposed to stand for.

(14,576 posts)I guess it's grown. Perhaps we're coming, not only as an internet community, but as a people, to a tipping point.
Greed is not good, and profit is a dirty word if not properly restrained. The MIC needs to be reined in and the forever war stopped. Domestic spying needs to be stopped. Global warming needs to be addressed aggressively with America taking the lead as it should.
Healthcare, living wage, social security, all rights!
I'm with you.

I came in 2002 during the run-up to the Iraq invasion. A friend who was protesting in the streets with me directed me here. I fully accepted the premise of this site then -- and I still do. As a consequence, I find this year's savage civil war to be all the more distressing.
There are no "loyalty oaths" but one: to support the Democratic nominee and to see Democrats elected. Because Democrats are not the enemy.

I've been politically active since the early '70s. My first vote was for McGovern, who opposed another imperialistic war. I still remember my first bumper sticker, "Lick Dick in '72".
My latest just says, "Bernie 2016".

And the Clintons played a large role in that.

(17,656 posts)I knew a lot of part-time working mothers in the mid-90s who deserved the same rate of pay as the full-time employees.
Also, I think it would be fantastic if kids starting out today did not have to scrap together pennies to pay for gas, like I did back when the minimum wage was $1.30 an hour.
I think gas was 35 cents a gallon back then.
Yet, I am still amazed at the high price of gas, but at least now I do not have to stockpile my pennies in order to pay for enough gas to fill up my car.
By the way, Facebook and Twitter are both overwhelmingly for Sanders, as well.

...give me hope for our future.
Our country has gone to hell. The corporations own our politicians. Our politicians take their money and are beholden to them. The corporations get deregulated, undertaxed, bailed out and reap a windfall of obscene profits.
Our country has become drunk on warmongering. The neocons have taken over our foreign policy.
So many living in poverty. So many middle class and even upper-middle class folks are struggling under stagnant wages (because corporations are greedy) soaring healthcare costs and a pitiful minimum wage.
So much is wrong!
Then, we have Bernie--One of the only politicians who has the cajones to break up this sickness. We are lucky that he is running. We are lucky that he is willing to take on these very powerful, global magnates, politicians and other corrupt individuals--who have been partying for the last few decades, while destroying our democracy.
We are so lucky that he is running. He's the real deal. And so our his supporters. So wonderful that Bernie has galvanized others who get it too.

(55,981 posts)Help those in need. Save Social Security and Medicare from the attacks by the conservatives in both parties. Keep our loved ones from getting killed for the profits of the 1%. Eliminate for-profits prisons, end the war on drugs, and stop the killing of unarmed men of color. We want to take care of our vets and fix the infrastructure.
The anti-progressives like things as they are. And even accept the fact that, unless we do something, they will continue to get worse. They want to protect what they have so badly they are willing to ignore those less fortunate.
Clinton may be interested in social justice, but not if it will cost her friends in the 1% any of their wealth.

(12,882 posts)This is where the "White hats" (good guys) congregate. And the sand speck that this pearl has grown around is Sanders (no pun intended). We all realize what's really at stake here. It's not about glass ceilings or hair doos or dare don'ts. It's about our nation being hijacked by the powerful, self-serving, monied interests that want to enslave the rest of us and swindle away what's rightfully ours.
We have a person of impeccable integrity who rallies our flaccid hopes and shows us how to throw off the yoke of subservience. That selfless individual is Senator Sanders. The GENUINE chance for "Hope and Change".

Many times at DU, I have signed my posts with:

I was on the edge of giving up hope for the 3rd Way Clinton Demopublican Party,

It's easy to get discouraged when people you grew to like here suddenly become partisan monsters, hurling useless insults at you, like you're an enemy ...
Well, most of those mean ass people are corralled, and, what remains are most excellent liberals who wish to embrace a vision of a world where everyday people see a decent life before them and know they needn't fear for the futures of their own children and grandchildren ...
Bernie's vision is my vision ... Totally, 100% behind this wonderful person ... Thanks Bonobo ...

(36,392 posts)As are the others. I honestly believe that giving in this time around - voting for yet another corporate democrat who will work for the hyper rich and with the republicans - is morally wrong. At some point you have to draw the line. I've been voting for democrats since 1978, and don't understand how the party became so useless. But the widespread visceral support for Sanders should be a wake-up call, and isn't. Enough.
