Listen to Paul Ryan Praise then Reject the Philosophy of Atheist Ayn Rand

We all have our heros when we are growing up. One of Paul Ryan’s heros was Ayn Rand. In fact ‘hero’ seems to be too weak of a word for Mr. Ryan. ’Philosophical hero’ is actually the term that he used. Well, until he then completely changed his opinion about Ayn Rand. From a lifetime ‘Philosophical Hero’ to outcast in less than a year? How does this happen? Politics. Did I mention, she dis not believe in God.

Who was Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand was a Russian American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter. She is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism.

Almost every person who has taken a political science course at university has read at least one of her novels. In fact, some people become quite excited about the philosophies she proposes. But then most people intellectually outgrow her teachings. Interesting as they may be to a political novice, her teachings quickly seem idealistic, adolescent and two-dimentional in their disconnect with the real world. While she does bring up a few points that should make you think (this is why she is required reading), to give her teachings the status of being you ‘personal philosophy’ as Paul Ryan did, would mean that your intellectual growth stopped after your first political reading.
