2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSanders' support is coming from everywhere
The choice is clear to me. Sanders is our only hope for a Better Future, if we even have a chance at it. Clinton will take us down the same road we have been on, with business and politics as usual.
If you want a change, Sanders is the right choice. If you are satisfied with the way things are, go with Clinton. But dont expect your children and their children to have a Better Future. Its not possible with her. We at least have a chance with Sanders.
In answer to Susan Estrich on where the support for Sanders is coming from, its coming from all of us who have awakened to the reality that we face. We will not stand down. Our numbers are increasing daily.
We are standing up for what is right, and we will be heard at the ballot box.

(42,862 posts)Even if combined and given directly to Sanders, the Webb, Chafee & O'Malley votes aren't enough to help Bernie. I just don't see that Bernie has a path to be the nominee.

(538 posts)...some may take the bait but in this day & age people are finally getting it. The polls don't reflect the millions of youth that support Sanders.

(24,411 posts)Iowa votes first--and that caucus isn't for 9 weeks! The ads are just starting to ramp up. The full throttle of the campaigns hasn't been seen yet--in the first state!
As a Sanders supporter in Iowa, I'm very hopeful and encouraged!
His large crowds are going to be incredible!
Sanders supporters--there are a lot encouraging signs for Sanders!

(24,411 posts)Hillary came in third in the Iowa caucuses. She lost the Democratic nomination.
All Hillary supporters were telling everyone to just give it up in 08. Good gracious, she was ahead in every national poll! And every state poll as well!
We were told to just accept her inevitability.
I would think that Hillary supporters, more than anyone else, would be a bit more humble and hesitant to make such grandiose predictions.
Anything can happen! You guys know that, more than anyone. Especially if you supported her candidacy in 08.

(24,411 posts)No one said that Sanders was Obama. But if you look at 2008, and what happened--we're seeing the exact same dynamics play out.
--Sanders and Obama were both polling at 4 percent in the spring that preceded the Iowa caucuses.
--Both Sanders and Obama polled 8-14 points behind Hillary during the October before the Iowa caucuses (depending which poll you look at).
--Hillary Clinton was leading in ALL national polls, and ALL state polls against Obama--during this time in the 08 Dem primary process.
The dynamics of Iowa are 2008 vs 2016 are nearly identical. Support for Hillary is soft in Iowa. Voters are looking for any reason to vote for someone else, because she just simply doesn't play well here. The results of the 08 caucuses (Clinton 3rd place) validate this. Sander's 35 percent support in Iowa--when his campaign is barely off the ground around here, is also proof of strong and growing support here that could blossom into a win.
That is why she came in third in Iowa. When there are viable alternatives--especially attractive candidates on the left--there's trouble for her in Iowa.
Anything could happen in Iowa. It did it 08, why not 2015?

(24,411 posts)Who you support, definitely dictates how you see things.
I think there's plenty of reasons, data and information to make the case that Hillary could win Iowa and go on to take the nomination. Conversely, there's a whole lot of reasons, data and information to make the case that Bernie could win Iowa and go on to take the nomination.
We each hope that our candidate makes it.
I look forward to time marching on, frankly. I think there are too many unknowns at this point.
We will know so much more in a month or six weeks.
I think we both can agree that it's going to be a roller coaster, and it's going to be exciting.
Best to you!

(9,497 posts)If by some chance, she wins the nom, I will have 5months to try to convince myself of blackening the circle next to her name on my ballot.
I will need all the time to do so. I am not positive I will be able to.

(30,058 posts)Passed? This alone would point to nothing changing. The GOP is pulling for Sanders to win, won't happen.
I want the best chance to have a Democrat making SC nominations, I want Hillary to be the next president. Some here on DU has changed from being a Sanders supported to being a Hillary supporter, yes even some have left Sanders for Hillary.
