In U.S., Socialist Presidential Candidates Least Appealing

by Justin McCarthy

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As the 2016 presidential election field takes shape, more than nine in 10 Americans say they would vote for a qualified presidential candidate who is Catholic, a woman, black, Hispanic or Jewish. Less than half of Americans would vote for a candidate who is a socialist.

But really, other than republicans - I dont know anyone my age or younger that reacts (at all) to that word. We weren't brought up being taught to fear it. Maybe its different in other areas of the country.

Ive honestly never given it much thought before this election.

I look at politics like a football game---strategy, players, ground game, etc.

I honestly think that using the word Socialist is not good strategy.

I understand where youre coming from. And as for the word? I have no idea what to think. Repubs have been screaming "socialism" for years. Maybe theyve numbed voters to it. Or maybe not.

I dont doubt that it probably complicates things for Bernie in some circles. His only choice was to embrace it though.

from the Gilded Age through the New Deal shouldn't be scared of it.

The reason there's been such a violent reaction against it (especially right after WWI and after WWII-1970s) and why it's been demonized or dropped down the memory hole is it scares the hell out of those making out like bandits (literally) at the top of capitalism's pyramid scheme.

It is now a badge of honor.
I am now and have been for the majority of my life been a socialist.
Because of the fallout from the Cold War, I was confused.
The cold war is long dead. The words have lost their power.

Socialism is recognized as "Us United" as in the "United States".

Sanders probably will not win the nomination and he knows that. Instead he is intent on rebuilding a progressive democratic left in this country within the institutional framework of the Democratic Party. I fully support that effort. It is the path to a progressive electoral victory.

Have fun with your center-right corporate samo-samo candidate. Stuff dreams are made of, amirite?

And we support the fight for social programs that have saved the 99%.

Here's what Sanders has to say:

Almost everything <Roosevelt> proposed was called "socialist." I thought I would mention that just in passing. Social Security, which transformed life for the elderly in this country, was defined by his opponents as "socialist." The concept of the "minimum wage"—that workers had to be paid at least a certain amount of money for their labor—was seen as a radical intrusion into the marketplace and was described as "socialist." Unemployment insurance (the idea that if you lose your job at least you have something to fall back), abolishing child labor, the 40-hour work week, collective bargaining (the rights of workers to engage in negotiations with a union), strong banking regulations, deposit insurance, and job programs that put millions of people to work were all described, in one way or another, as "socialist." Yet as you all know, all of these programs and many more have become the fabric of our nation and in fact the foundation of our middle class.

Thirty years later after Roosevelt's speech, in the 1960s, President Lyndon Johnson fought for Medicare and Medicaid to provide health care to millions of senior citizens and families with children, persons with disabilities and some of the most vulnerable people in this country. Today Medicare does not seem to be such a terribly radical idea, to say that once they get old they should have medical insurance, but when it was proposed once again we heard right-wing forces describe these programs as socialistic and a threat to our American way of life.

Of course we could vote for HRC and 8 more years of the status quo that has decimated the 99%.

Two sides to the class war and Clinton is on the side with Goldman-Sachs. No Democrat should put corp wealth before helping our poor.
