O'Malley: we must use Federal procurement to advance gun safety

Government agencies are the largest purchaser of firearms, accounting for 40 percent of gun industry revenues. By adjusting federal procurement policies, the federal government can encourage gun manufacturers and dealers to work to prevent trafficking and gun violence, while driving innovation that advances gun safety.
As president, Governor OMalley will:
Use procurement contracts to advance gun safety. OMalley will require manufacturers that seek federal contracts to make simple design changes that advance gun safety and improve law enforcements ability to trace firearms. These include hidden serial numbers that cannot be defaced, microstamping, magazine disconnect mechanisms, and other safety improvements.
Governor O'Malley pushed for and signed into law some of the toughest gun restrictions in the nation in 2013, in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre. Gun purchases now require a biometric-based background check as well as safety training. 45 separate models of weapons were banned. Magazines holding over 10 rounds were banned. The mental health background check was expanded and reporting requirements were strengthened.
As President, O'Malley would require all arms dealers with Federal contracts to include indelible serial numbers, microstamping, and other safety and transparency features in the firearms they make.
Actions. Not words.
