2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary Clinton Goes Bush League
By William Rivers Pitt
Secretary Clinton bristled. "Wait a minute," she replied, "he has basically used his answer to impugn my integrity. Let's be frank here." Rather than be frank, however, Clinton went completely sideways and claimed that she takes barrels of corrupt Wall Street cash because 9/11 happened, or something. I've been watching political debates of all kinds since God wore short pants, and this ranked right up there with the most vile, disingenuous, sneaky, low-road slippery debate statements I have ever heard.
To wit:
You know, not only do I have hundreds of thousands of donors, most of them small, I am very proud that for the first time a majority of my donors are women, 60 percent. So I - I represented New York. And I represented New York on 9/11 when we were attacked. Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtown Manhattan where Wall Street is. I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild. That was good for New York. It was good for the economy. And it was a way to rebuke the terrorists who had attacked our country.
So, let me get this straight. Because Clinton has a lot of women who donate to her campaign, and because two airliners obliterated the World Trade Center in an attack that had people jumping to their deaths out of 100-story windows on live television, her acceptance of millions in dirty money has something to do with being good for the economy, and because it is a "rebuke" to the terrorists.
Gotcha.
On a peaceful sunny day, invoking 9/11 as a means of misdirecting a legitimate critique of the company she keeps, and of the expectations those friends have for the checks they write, would be grossly inappropriate. When she dropped that line, Parisians were still hosing blood off the sidewalks, sweeping up the broken glass and trying to identify the dead. The people in the US she seeks to represent - most specifically New Yorkers, who were shaken by the Paris attack and whom she invoked so passionately - were used by her to score some debate points. Her invocation of 9/11 was not some verbal oops; it was a deliberate waving of the bloody shirt at a time when the nation and the world were still reeling from the events of the day before.
A number of commentators have compared Secretary Clinton's 9/11 debate comment to the 2008 campaign tactics of Rudy Giuliani, who 9/11 couldn't go 9/11 to the men's room 9/11 without 9/11 invoking 9/11 9/11 like a verbal hiccup 9/11. That tactic worked about as well as the wax wings Icarus used when he flew too close to the sun. It was grotesque then, and is grotesque now, but doing so on the doorstep of a massacre puts Clinton into a whole other category.
In baseball, when a player pulls some punk move - headhunting with a fastball, cleat-spiking during a slide, failing to run out a pop fly - the game has a universal retort: "That's bush league." Bush league is precisely where candidate Clinton has parked herself ... and that's "Bush" with a capital "B."
This is What It All Means:
Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney and the rest of that noxious cabal used the false intelligence provided by Chalabi to intimidate and terrify the nation into war, fulfilling a conquest dream they had been cuddling since Nixon was chased from office. They, by way of a useful fool named George W. Bush and with the full compliance of the media, deliberately employed the September 11 attacks against the US people as a means of getting their war, and the financial/political payday it came to be. It was a crime, as-yet unpunished, and Hillary Clinton voted for it.
That she would pivot a question about her questionable campaign financing into a self-serving harangue about 9/11, one day after the Paris catastrophe, is an act of verbal violence beyond moral repair. Know this: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and the rest created ISIS, which I shall henceforth refer to as Daesh, by way of that war. They got their war by using 9/11 against their own people at a time when those people were feeling most vulnerable. People are feeling vulnerable again after Paris, and Hillary Clinton used 9/11 one scant day after the bloodletting to get Bernie Sanders off her back, and to lay a brick to the topic, because she does not like talking about her friends in low places.
People who will say anything to win office are truly frightening, and truly dangerous. Welcome to the Bush league, candidate Clinton. You just graduated.

Even on DU3 when I served on MIRT I remember an under 100 poster being banned for it. MIRT only has power over new posters under a certain post count and has no jurisdiction over high post count PM trolls like VR, so I guess the nasty trolling simply must be tolerated if your block list is full and can't avoid the unsolicited PM's using that method.

(382 posts)I think reasonable people realize that Wall Street donates to Republicans because they want them to win; they give to Secretary Clinton because they fear she will.
Paul Krugman paraphrased that just the other day, and did not give me credit. Bernie slandered his rival for the nomination after promising not to attack people, only issues. Even Krugman can see through that.
Additionally, most reasonable people understand that going up against all of the GOP money without PACs or big money support is deep water. Republicans can spend a billion dollars in Florida and Ohio and win the election against Senator Sanders. They won't be able to do it against Secretary Clinton. Although the analogy is ludicrous the way the issues have played out in this particular campaign, it is nonetheless apt: He is bringing a knife to a gun fight when it comes to campaign finances. Secretary Clinton has the only realistic and reasonable plan: Win the election, then appoint liberal justices who will overturn Citizens United.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This is a very sexist comment saying Vanillay rhapsody sends 'pms' through emails. Not funny at all regardless of the LOL. It is offensive and insulting. If her pm's are a problem, she can be blocked, no needs to make sexist jokes in full view in gd or gdp. I have no idea why folks still think pms jokes about women are funny and not straight up sexism. Sad that du treats women this way.

Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)That won't be changing soon. My opinion of other DUers has been in a steady decline, as well.
It's an interesting phenomenon at DU how divisive the contributors can be during the primary season. I like Bernie Sanders and would vote for him if he won the nomination despite disagreeing with many of his key views on important issues. It would never occur to me to impugn his character or disparage him in any way. I guess I continue to like him because he never hesitates to distance himself from comments like those of Will Pitt.

(17,997 posts)But I completely understand why he isn't.
I don't blame him for leaving. marym, it is because of hearing him speak in 2003 in Chapel Hill, NC, that I am an activist. Every thing he said turned out to be true, but I already knew some of it because I had gone to foreign websites after not finding anyone in our MSM who spoke the truth about Bush's lies. Here was this young man actually speaking the truth about the WMDs and our Civil Rights. I asked him where his security was and he replied "there is safety in numbers". I was afraid someone would try to harm him for speaking out.
Anyway, I'm here also, when you need a shoulder!

Juicy_Bellows
(2,427 posts)MuseRider
(34,119 posts)to those who perpetrated this was that they could use them later for emotional political support. Most of us know how vile that is. If you supported it then you have to deal with that, you do NOT get to use your victims later instead you should be apologizing seriously and not making excuses. A well thought out, poll tested, unemotional comment about a bad choice is not going to cut it especially when half the world and other of your colleagues knew it was the wrong choice.
As for the label, that is very insightful the way you said this. I had never thought of it quite that way. People change and their votes should change accordingly. I grow tired of watching what I always thought the good thing (actual liberals) in this country go away because of people who lack historical knowledge or care for others when the going gets tough.
It is a game and one they intend to win no matter what it takes or who they have to roll over to get there. Enough so that our last president and his people used trading cards for the lives of their enemies. The analogy to a game is apt I believe on both sides and in part understandable. I think it was during the Reagan administration that Malcolm Forbes said "He who dies with the most toys wins." anyway that is when I remember seeing it on bumper stickers etc. and it fit the time. We HAVE to win whatever it takes, we are willing to settle. We know that each person will have to compromise, that is just how it is, but when we know someone is saying things they have never believed or will never intend to do and we willingly vote for that person without knowing what they really will do baffles me.
I believe that everyone has the right to vote how they see fit for themselves or for what they think is best for the country. They have the right to express their beliefs. They also must be ready for push back if they express them. We should all be grownup enough for that. I was until all discussion ceased with silly little thread jacks just to side track the threads. Now I have ignore. Those who actually discuss issues are still here but the rest are gone for me.

(34,119 posts)It was a vile statement at any time but at this particular time it was just horrible. The entire room I was in let out a long, sad sigh before they cut into her for saying that. That is quite the company to keep there.
senz

No explanation basically means that she either does not think we deserve to know or that it would not be the kind of answer that would help her get elected. I mean really, look at the bent truth that comes easily to boost her numbers. Shame isn't it?
I was actually stunned at the sigh that happened, it was like everyone was punched in the stomach at the same time. One guy from the middle of the room asked if everyone else heard that or was that just something he thought he heard. I had to come home to listen to the rest of her response as the room got rather noisy after that and none of the noise was kind or polite. It was just one of those moments.

(10,497 posts)the question. In response to Hillary's statement that their (Wall Street) money cannot buy her, Bernie pointed out that Wall Street has been funding her for decades, "Why would they keep paying the money?" There is no real answer other than the truth, they have bought her, lock, stock and barrel! I don't understand how she can still have so many supporters if they know she is bought off to do things for the .01% that hurts the rest of us.
Her pre-planned canned answer was disgusting! It was disrespectful to the point Dick Cheney might have blushed had it been him who said it. This is the answer she and her team had come up with since they knew the question was coming. It was calculated to distract and wrap her up in the responder cloak as someone who helped on 9/11. Also, to say that she has mostly small donations is utter BS. Ask her how much of her total money raised did those 60% of women contribute? My guess is 1% of her total take might be from women. The vast majority of her money comes from corporations. People are quick to say that Bernie is not a Democrat, but I would say that any Democrat with that much corporate money cannot be, by definition, a Democrat! Why are people afraid to call it what it is? When Bernie pointed out her Wall Street money she acted like it was unfair to even bring it up. (787 posts)It fell on totally deaf ears on Hillary supporters. The whole Bush Administration was populated with PNAC founders (including Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz) and, as you said, they had wanted war in Iraq for years. They had urged Bill Clinton to invade and when GWB got in office and appointed Cheney as Vice President and Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary it was a given that we were going to war in Iraq.
The WMD was just an excuse. They may have initially believed it but their real goal relates to their belief that regime change in Iraq would lead to a US types of democracies throughout the middle east. Of course, when they put out the resolution to go to war in Iraq, they knew that the Weapons claims were suspect.
My post was that Hillary, like any really informed person, knew the goals of the PNAC. She may have believed the weapons were there or there was a threat but she had to know that the 2002 Authorization for Military Force in Iraq was a war vote, not a vote for diplomacy because it was authorizing PNAC members.

(787 posts)The post mostly puts a name to what was in Will Pitt's post about Cheney Wolfowitz and the "cabal". They had an actual organization called the PNAC whose main issue was to lobby for the invasion of Iraq. This was before 9 11 and totally unrelated to WMD. They had some pipe dream that invasion would change the Middle East to being a western democracy and economy.
10 of the original signers of their first letter to Bill Clinton urging Bill to invade Iraq became members of the Bush Administration in the highest positions including the Vice President and the Secretary of Defense.
If you followed politics closely and were informed at all (as we hope Clinton was as a Senator) she would have to know about the PNAC and would know that regardless of the selling of the Iraq War, she was authorizing people who wanted Regime Change in Iraq as their primary foreign policy goal. Her supporter's current meme that she was not authorizing war but some kind of diplomatic weapon to get rid of WMD is totally false given the make up of the Bush Administration as members of the PNAC. It was clearly a vote for invasion.
Will Pitt alludes to the PNAC in his article but does not actually name them.

Her experience has taught her nothing. That pretty much means she's not qualified

(49,408 posts)is the primary concern of voters. Like it or not, Hillary is the only one among the current group of candidates available who they believe has the experience. It doesn't matter what you or I think.
Recent events have put an exclamation point on the importance of having someone at the helm with extensive foreign policy experience. The public is not going to leave the country's fate in the hands of who they believe to be an amatuer.

Experience doesn't mean squat if you learn nothing from that experience.

(49,408 posts)some here at DU GD-P. You're disagreement is not only with me, it's with scores of elected officials
who have everyday dealings in the real world. They have overwhemingly chosen Hillary, with full knowledge of any flaws she might have.
Have a nice evening.

(17,997 posts)The motives, for many of them, are questionable.
The majority of congress are hardcore rightwingers. I disagree with all of them too, in almost everything.
Knowledge doesn't do any good if you don't use it for good.

(49,408 posts)The American public is aware of this that's why they have no problem re-electing their local politicians, time after time.
During her first term in office, Madam President may not rise to everyone's expectations, but it won't be because she won't be trying to do her best for the American people.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Yes, everyone is flawed. Unfortunately, we now have a political process that relies on extraordinary amount of funds to run for office. This causes good people, without funding, to be excluded from the political process.

(39,909 posts)My wife is the only Medical First Responder for 60 sq. miles of rural Arkansas.
She doesn't get a paycheck. In fact, it costs money to maintain a 4wd "Jimmy" outfitted for her needs as a First Responder in this very rural area.
She does it because she cares enough about other people to get out of a warm bed at 3AM to go help those in distress.
She also is a strong Bernie supporter.

Bush League - so fitting and TRUE! It was a desperate move on her part and a watershed moment. People are disgusted by what she did and rightly so.

And he delivered .
Wow this is one big fat hit piece on a Dem candidate, that holds a far bigger resume, greater accomplishments and respect around the world, & more power in her pinky finger than Pitt ever would dream of having on his best day of writing public smear against HRC.
Pitt's opinion hit piece says all we need to know about any truth to his words.
A nastier page of lies could not have been opined on truthout by anyone but William Pitt.
Geezuz You should have put this in the bernie group.

He could write for a RW site & they'd probably pay him a lot more.
Didn't he get banned from here?
Nice that he's found friends who'll drag his Hillary hate piece back in here.
2 mo 13 days & Hillary moves on to the GE.
The others go home.
Amen.
