In a surprising turn in the Democratic Primary race, Bernie Sanders, who has been flagging in the polls lately, made an announcement that he will forgo living in the luxurious White House quarters provided for Presidents if he is elected.
"I'm building a classic Vermont cabin on The Ellipse to be used as my quarters during the time I am in office. It will be a temporary installation that can be removed at the end of my second term," Sanders told this reporter in a private interview. "I just wouldn't be comfortable in that big old rambling place, frankly. It's just not my style."
When asked what the White House's function would be during his Presidency, he said, "Well, it would make an nice roomy homeless shelter, I think. Maybe we'll do that."
Is this a bid to cast himself as a simple man of the people, as one supporter close to the #feeltheBern organization claimed, or some sort of publicity stunt? The campaign is getting curiouser and curiouser.
When asked what this "Vermont Cabin" will look like, candidate Sanders handed this reporter a photo:

In the early 1920s, automobile ownership was starting to increase among the American public, in part because of the marketing tactics of some of the men in the 1924 photo. Seated from left to right are Harvey Firestone (yes, that Firestone), Calvin Coolidge, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Grace Coolidge, and John Calvin Coolidge, Sr. Standing behind Mrs. Coolidge is Russell Firestone.
For the past 10 years, Edison, Ford, and the Firestones had been taking camping trips across the country to publicize recreational use of automobiles. During one such trip in August 1924, the industrial giants stopped at Plymouth to visit the president, and although they only stayed for an hour, the journalists covering the presidents vacation made the most of it, photographing the group in front of the Coolidge Homestead. While the guests were there, President Coolidge gave Henry Ford a gift: a sap bucket that had belonged to his great-great grandfather. He signed his name on the bottom of the bucket, which is what he appears to be doing in this photo....

Of course, they're not worth milions--that area has yet to be developed and has suffered economically since the Limestone AFB closed. It's a pristine place, though--if I were filming period movies, that's where i'd go--in the good weather, anyway.
