Presidential campaign contributions are capped at $2700

Just as a reminder. You cannot give more than $2700 to any Presidential campaign (though you can give once for the Primary and once for the General once that committee forms).

So any dinner that requires a contribution more than $2700 is not for a campaign, it's for a party committee (that's capped at $33,400), a PAC (that's capped at $5000), a state committee (that's capped at $10,000). Conceivably a super PAC (which has no contribution limits) could throw a dinner and have a candidate speak, but the FEC would probably take a really, really hard look at that.

Also, while I have your attention, just a reminder: absolutely no candidates can take money from super PACs. It's illegal.

It still demonstrates the intricacies of the fucked up election laws in this country that allow for moneyed quid pro quo which is ethically challenging while maintaining the semblance of legality.

No, but some campaigns can utilize loopholes to evade election laws that don't allow Super PAC's to coordinate directly with said campaign.

Its insulting that you believe we don't see this play out in real time.

Or I suppose that millionaire in TX who wanted his million $ back when Rick Perry dropped out was just delusional?

Or maybe we are imagining the Koch Brothers influence within all levels of elections?

We Americans are the most generous people in the world! You all know this to be true so I'm not surprised at all to see the level of generosity these mega-rich folks are displaying. It's the most American thing they could be doing! So, to suggest that they want anything in return besides the inner glow that results from charitable works is Un-American and an insult to our God Fearing Oligarchy! For shame. For Shame...

Thank you for that.

I needed the levity re: this OP which totally pisses me off. This is THE problem in the US, both parties, & around the globe, money controlling govts.

...yes, I am grateful for some levity.

I think the FEC is dysfunctional and doesn't give a rats a** what or how corporations and their rich owners funnel money to candidates. It's all about legalized bribery. If you got big bucks, even if you stole those big bucks, you too can buy any candidate you want...except for Bernie.

The Kochs and Sheldon Adelson are just average citizens with no more influence than you or me.

Those armies of lobbyists in Washington are just wasting their time.

Corporations have absolutely no more influence over politicians than you or I do.

How Super PACs And Campaigns Are Coordinating In 2016
Efforts to circumvent the coordination ban have grown more aggressive.

....Democratic Party presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton also gets support from the Correct the Record super PAC through public channels. The group posts opposition research to its site that the Clinton campaign can reuse. The Clinton camp also pays a market rate to use the super PAC's non-public research. This essentially makes the super PAC a direct arm of the campaign, subsidized by six-figure contributions Clinton cannot raise directly.....

Its all a big game, and a scam. We're being played by Big$$$. The only way to beat them & get our Democracy back is by electing those who reject their money & aren't beholden to them.
