2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI don't think last night's debate is going to have much of an effect on the polls.
It's being said here that Hillary's 9/11 - Wall Street comments were a gaff and she that should apologize. That's Bernie folks talking not all Dems. Hillary did not say we should not being back Glass Steagall, she said doing so does not go far enough. She is right that the shadow banks need to be regulated and I think voters in the future will get that. The more Bernie pushes Glass Steagall the more chance Hillary will have to talk about shadow banks. Voters will understand that her plan is more comprehensive as Paul Krugman has said.
I also think voters will see Hillary as tougher on terrorism and better on foreign policy. Her education plan will seem more reasonable especially the idea that you should have some skin in the game regarding college tuition. And the wealthier you are the more skin you should have in the game.
I think the thing Bernie folks don't get is that what Bernie is saying, even though it is very progressive, does not fit where the voters are today. He will continue to appeal to his 25% to 30% but the debate will not move the needle for him.

(24,689 posts)She said simply reinstating GS is not enough and wouldn't accomplish what is needed to be done to fix the problem. Her plan would work and mentioned some economic experts that agreed with her.
But I do agree last night debate wont affect the polls. Nothing big happened either way. The news is hardly covering it.

(19,877 posts)because viewers see 2 guys trying to pile on her and her handling it with no problem. Whether who you believe won is moot, at this point she doesn't need to "win", she just needs to show she can handle the pile on.

(146,329 posts)any support. On the other hand, none said anything that will shift support. As far as polls are concerned, I think the debate was a wash. No bumps for anyone, really. I predict the polling will show pretty stable numbers, without any significant changes.
O'Malley might pick up a couple of percentage points, though.

(32,611 posts)The Wall Street thing was not a gaff except on the inter-nuts. Most people have no clue what the Glass-Stegall thing is all about but her calm response explaining why we need broader more comprehensive regulations is what will have the casual observer nodding their heads.
As for foreign policy, most voters don't know much about it but they come away with the impression that Hillary is calm and knowledgeable. That is all they need to know for her to get their vote and allow them to sleep at night as the details don't really matter. iows - they think she's got it.
I try to watch debates and the news about the campaign for general impression and not small details given that 95% of the voters are not really paying attention yet.
Someone wrote that on the stage last night we had one rose (or pick your favorite flower) and two thorns. That perfectly describes the take away message. Perhaps unfortunate but it is what it is.
