Bernie Sanders Barely Spoke About the Paris Attacks During His Opening Debate Remarks

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders quickly pivoted from the Paris attacks back to his domestic policy-focused stump speech at the start of Saturday night’s Democratic debate.

After a debate introduction began with a moment of silence, CBS debate moderator John Dickerson asked the candidates to comment on Friday night’s attacks, which left more than 129 dead.

Sanders said he was “shocked” and “disgusted” by the attacks, for which ISIS terrorists have claimed responsibility, and vowed that the U.S. would lead the world to “rid our planet of this barbarous organization.” But immediately thereafter shifted back to his domestic policy.

“I’m running for president because,” Sanders said, “what I hear is people’s concerned that the economy we have is a rigged economy.”

His campaign, the Vermont Senator said, is about a “political revolution.” He also did not change his previous statements that climate change is the greatest threat to national security.

Before the debate, the Sanders campaign argued with CBS about the format of the debate, with operatives from a rival campaign claiming the argument was in part about the shift to foreign policy—a claim the campaign denied.

coverage and having pundits on 24/7 discussing the issue. Like, that wasn't enough? Ad nauseum, ad nauseum, ad nauseum. Basta!

I am glad he didn't pander, use 9/11 & terrorism as a debating point, and stuck to what the US domestic situation is about, which is the fucking economy.

So did they argue or not? The campaign says no, and the bought & paid for media says yes. I know who I trust given the PPP poll being bought by Correct The Record last night.

Climate change is our greatest national security threat. I can leave you to research why if you get some time between your busy posting schedule this morning.

his opening remarks were pretty awful in that he didn't comprehensively address the question as given. But, then he went on to decisively win the debate. He trounced Hillary on her campaign donations and on her war in Iraq that has led to terrorists having a bigger foot hold in the ME than they had before and totally destabilizing the region and giving us the biggest human rights crisis and refugee crisis than we have ever had in any other point in history. So, yeah I give him a pass on his ill advised opening remarks.

Trying to shift the conversation when everyone is thinking about Paris did not serve him well. I think he recovered somewhat, though, as the debate continued, but that was a serious misstep at the beginning, I believe.

That soon after the Paris attacks, people are still thinking about it as the main event.

Refusing to allow important issues crowd out other important issues. He gave a balanced explanation of what his campaign is about to introduce himself to voters.
