2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum2 million strong SEIU may be gearing up to endorse Clinton next Tuesday
Officials at the two-million-member Service Employees International Union have been told to clear their calendars Tuesday. Will this be SEIUs long-expected Hillary Clinton endorsement? Everyone is saying the endorsement happens on the 17th, an SEIU insider tells POLITICO. A final vote from the unions executive committee has not yet taken place, but the committee will have the chance to hold one at its Tuesday meeting. (The announcement could take place at a planned event with low wage workers also scheduled for Tuesday.)
...
SEIU spokesperson Sahar Wali confirmed that the executive board will meet Tuesday but said no endorsement decision had been made. SEIU executive committee Member David Rolf told us the same.
Joe Bidens decision not to run cleared the path for a Clinton endorsement, the SEIU source tells POLITICO. Some staffers were less than thrilled when Hillary balked at endorsing a $15 minimum wage (she opted for $12 instead). But Clinton was the only presidential candidate to appear (albeit by phone) at SEIUs Fight for $15 conference in June, and shes shown up repeatedly alongside SEIU-represented home health care and child care workers during the past several months. There are also some personnel ties between the campaign and the union: SEIUs former deputy national political director, Heather Stone, became Clintons chief of staff in August.

Speculative article, for sure. But the timing makes sense. As the author mentions, the SEIU is expected to join Team Hillary, anyway, so it is really more a question on when the announcement comes.

Endorsing candidates is part of the duties of the executive board of every union.

(9,527 posts)There were some people upset on Facebook. That doesn't qualify as significant backlash. Nobody was pressured into resigning, none of the unions took back the endorsement.
I'm sure I could find a postal worker who doesn't like their union endorsing Sanders. That doesn't mean it doesn't reflect the majority of their members.

(49,388 posts)endorsed Bernie Sanders. The AFL-CIO affiliated, NALC has a membership of over 300,000+.
The union endorsing Bernie is the American Postal Workers union which represents postal clerks, mail handlers and custodians.
Interesting to note, the letter carriers union, (NALC) endorsed Hillary way back in Sept. of 2007 more than a year before the national elections. Hillary attended and addressed union members at their national convention in July, 2008.
I suspect they are holding off their endorsement of Hillary this cycle because of the premature pick last time.

(6,437 posts)Because it is so easy to check. Using RCP, which still has their 2008 data, I wrote about this just the other day in a different post.
As of Nov 4th 2015, Clinton had 54.6% support. As of Nov 4th 2007, Clinton had 44.2% support.
She is doing better than 2008.

(9,748 posts)Again? Has any union endorsed her yet which does *not* currently have a ranking union official on Clinton's staff or a former Clinton staffer as a current ranking union official?
"Hiring" union officials just may turn out to be Hillary's smartest compaign expenditure.
tammywammy
(26,582 posts)Even so, the next major union poised to make an endorsement the Service Employees International Union, which represents 2 million workers is expected to throw its support behind Clinton. Union officials say their internal polling shows 75% of their members favor her. Sanders supporters may be louder, and may be concentrated in early-voting states getting a lot of attention, SEIU officials say, but Clinton is the candidate most of the union finds appealing.

I care about votes, and none of the above amount to a fart in the wind blowing at the summit of Mount Everest. All of the people mentioned above number in the hundreds at the least, and a few thousand at the most. More than ONE HUNDRED EIGHTEEN FUCKING MILLION votes were cast in the 2012 presidential election.
Followers and sycophants live and die by their candidate's endorsements or lack thereof. The rest of us think with our minds rather than our hearts.
