Democratic Group Called iVote Pushes Automatic Voter Registration

WASHINGTON — As Republicans across the country mount an aggressive effort to tighten voting laws, a group of former aides to President Obama and President Bill Clinton is pledging to counter by spending up to $10 million on a push to make voter registration automatic whenever someone gets a driver’s license.

The change would supercharge the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, known as the “motor voter” law, which requires states to offer people the option of registering to vote when they apply for driver’s licenses or other identification cards. The new laws would make registration automatic during those transactions unless a driver objected

Elections. Registration is good but getting to the polls is crucial.

what we also need is to have people on the ground who can do the following:

1) Help people - especially in rural red state areas - to inform about voting times, places and requirements and get whatever voter ID is required
2) Transport people to the polls and/or
3) Assist with completing requirements for having absentee ballots mailed

There are still some extremely vulnerable citizens who don't drive or who cannot drive for whatever reason. The draconian voter ID rules in too many red states make it very difficult for these people to get the kind of ID required and in some areas - especially in the rural RW south - people can still be intimidated from going to the polls on election day.

Yes - in this day and age ... racism still exists in very vicious forms.

State and local Dem organizations need to take this situation seriously and each group should have volunteers who will walk the walk.
