Confessions from a Hillary Shill

Good afternoon. As of today, I am officially a former "digital media specialist" (a nice way to say "paid Internet troll&quot previously employed by Hillary Clinton's campaign (through a PR firm). I'm posting here today as a confession of sorts because I can no longer continue to participate in something that has become morally-indigestible for me.

<skip>

The real problem for me started around the end of September and the beginning of October, when there was a change of direction from the team leader again. Apparently, the higher-ups in the firm caught wind of an impending spending splurge by the Clinton campaign that month and wanted to put up an impressive display. We received very specific instructions about how and what to post, and I was aghast at what I saw. It was a complete change in tone and approach, and it was extremely nasty in character. We changed from advocates to hatchet men, and it left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Just to give you an idea, here are some of the guidelines for our posting in October:

1) Sexism. This was the biggest one we were supposed to push. We had to smear Bernie as misogynistic and out-of-touch with modern sensibilities. He was to be characterized as "an old white male relic that believed women enjoyed being gang raped". Anyone who tried to object to this characterization would be repeatedly slammed as sexist until they went away or people lost interest.

The rest of the list will sound eerily familiar.

I worked many years in PR--and it is common knowledge--that large PR firms are hired by corporations, activists and politicians to further agendas.

Anyone suggesting that this is some kooky conspiracy, fails to understand what everyone in the PR industry considers common knowledge.

What I find most interesting are the talking points, key messages and memes that this Hillary shill was charged with disseminating. All were key themes that were leveraged during the campaign. You could watch as the "Bernie is sexist" meme was dropped, cultivated and waned. Same is true of the racism charges. All of those themes had an obvious life cycle. They were introduced, peaked and died.

This lends credibility to the accusations.

No doubt that there have been concerted efforts to position Bernie supporters as hipster brats; and Bernie as unelectable. Both laughable, manufactured constructs.

This messaging is coming from somewhere.
It makes complete sense that the Clinton camp is paying shills.

began to notice the similarity of what the Republican members were saying. I asked one

Democrats aren't being paid?" I replied, "No. I'm writing here to state my personal
beliefs, and I want to do this. I also enjoy having the opportunity to do this."

That clinched it. I then knew that they were being paid. I also realized that this particular
individual was also a new-comer to that forum, just as I was - but on opposite political sides.
He didn't stay very long in that forum.

Don't insult our intelligence. Fri Nov 6, 2015, 08:14 PM

Your defense against the charge of bigotry was to point out (correctly) that your statement was both descriptive and alliterative. The implicit premise of your post was: "If a characterization of a candidate is both descriptive and alliterative, then it can't possibly be bigotry."

I provided a counterexample:
1. If DemocratSinceBirth's argument were sound, then a descriptive, alliterative reference would never be bigotry.
2. The example I gave is a descriptive, alliterative reference but it is bigotry.
3. Therefore, DemocratSinceBirth's argument is not sound.

The argument form is known as modus tollens if you want to read up on it.

Minor quibble on using a comparative with an absolute.

Major disagreement about "unstoppable." That is just preposterous, and of a piece with the entire Hillary Clinton appeal -- vote for me because I am going to win. If people start thinking she might not win, she goes into free fall, as you saw all summer long. Luckily for Hillary she had two good TV appearances last month -- making her partisan advocates pretend with just a tad too much vehemence that She Is Unstoppable.

Fascinating scenario -- if Hillary loses the argument that she is unstoppable, she is stopped for good. Shout it a little louder. OOOOOOPS -- l said shout. You all know what using that word makes me . . . .

Logic and reason dictate that oligarchs will use every propaganda vehicle available to maintain and further their control of governments, media, and their labor supply.

For the oligarchs, convincing people to vote against their own interests, and to vote in the interests of oligarchy, is crucial to maintaining a stable, docile labor herd and bring in a steady flow of exponential profit for the ruling oligarchy.

Maintaining the illusion of democracy is necessary for preventing revolution. If the rest of the populace ever figured out what Bernie supporters already know, oligarchs would be fleeing for the safest bunkers available.

During the summer there were several thousand Sanders supporters on a Sanders group.

There were less than 50 on a Hillary group. My husband is a major IT geek (computer engineer) and he showed me the political discrepancy on Reddit between Clinton and Sanders.

By the summer, the minuscule number of Clinton supporters v Bernie supporters had become an Internet story.

It's interesting to note that Hillary had a very slight Reddit presence compared to Bernie's Reddit domination. If Hillary's presence has increased and is more vocal--that would certainly indicate a shift that may be part of a paid campaign.

Reddit has always had a large anti-Hillary/pro-Bernie presence and now--if there are more pro-Hillary voices--that's a red flag for shill activity. In particular, if those voices are furthering Hillary talking points and anti-Bernie memes--that's also an indicator that those posts are manufactured.

Apparently, it was REMOVED from the Bernie group there for having no proof. So, all we have is another bullshit conspiracy theory. Also, reading the comments on reddit makes one want to wash their eyes out with bleach.

Just to set the record straight....

The post was removed by us on /r/SandersForPresident because the OP failed to provide any proof of his employment with the Clinton campaign.

We didn't remove it for any other reason other than that. If he provides substantial proof that he is who he says he is, and that the campaign is implementing the strategy that he says they are, then we'd likely allow the content. But until then, it's no different than saying something like, "I met Obama at a bar once and he spit on my baby!"

Anyways. That's all. I've seen people suggest that we, the mods, are Hillary shills. This is false. We've been campaigning for Bernie since before Bernie even had a campaign. I wish I got paid for this work, though...

Fri Nov 6, 2015, 01:38 PM

2) Racism. We were instructed to hammer home how Bernie supporters were all privileged white students that had no idea how the world worked. We had to tout Hillary's great record with "the blacks" (yes, that's the actual way it was phrased), and generally use racial identity politics to attack Sanders and bolster Hillary as the only unifying figure.

...

4) Dirty tactics. This is where things got really bad. We were instructed to create narratives of Clinton supporters as being victimized by Sanders supporters, even if they were entirely fabricated. There were different instructions about how to do it, but something like this (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/10/31/1443064/-Dis-heartened-Hillary-Supporter) is a perfect example. These kind of posts are manufactured to divide and demoralize Sanders supporters, and are entirely artificial in nature. (The same thing happened in 2008, but it wasn't as noticeable before social media and public attention focused on popular forums like Reddit).

And many comments, saying right or wrong, it sums up what many have seen coming from her campaign over the last few weeks...the racist card, the red card, the sexist card and other attacks I've probably missed.

Clean it up Hill campaign or you will just add to the voters that don't like her already.

We didn't remove it for any other reason other than that. If he provides substantial proof that he is who he says he is, and that the campaign is implementing the strategy that he says they are, then we'd likely allow the content. But until then, it's no different than saying something like, "I met Obama at a bar once and he spit on my baby!"..."

So until they get proof, this is just more unsubstantiated GARBAGE people are using to discredit Clinton.

That kind of transparent bullshit is only effective on the stereotypical "low information" voter and as I've been told repeatedly by folks here on DU, low information voter is code for "white male hick who consistently votes against his self interest, because of innate bigotry".

The enlightened Democratic party could not possibly contain any of these pitiful creatures, so I'm curious as to whom the Clinton campaign is aiming these juvenile slurs.

we have evidence this kind of thing does happen, du has even had a member targeted, brad friedman

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8355

As noted, one of those they'd planned to target in hopes of discrediting in their nefarious scheme was yours truly, as well as my family, and VelvetRevolution.us, the non-profit, non-partisan organization co-founded by The BRAD BLOG. I was specifically targeted personally as the Chamber's first, "Tier 1" opponent in a Power Point presentation prepared for the nation's largest corporate lobby's law firm Hunton & Williams (H&W) by the three cyber-security/intelligence firms, HBGary Federal, Berico Technologies & Palantir Technologies. The triumvirate called themselves "Team Themis" in the plots developed for the U.S. Chamber to fraudulently discredit opponents and for a very similar scheme made for Bank of America to try and disrupt WikiLeaks.

So here are a few items following up on our previous report...

FARCing Aaron Barr: Marcy Wheeler picks up on the general leitmotif of my piece today, highlighting tools and techniques developed by the three Team Themis firms for use against terrorist networks, now turned against U.S. citizen political opponents of their corporate clients, the U.S. Chamber and BofA. Her piece offers real world details on how HBGary's CEO and Jackass-in-Chief, Aaron Barr, had previously used the very same social media analysis tools against FARC revolutionaries --- the same tools and techniques he'd hoped to employ against people like me --- and you.

Because considering the cash many firms rake in doing exactly this (and have for over a decade and a half), specializing in different tactics, and working for various industries, political campaigns and marketing pushes tells a different story.

You don't make money if what you are doing is ineffective.

...in the PR world. Companies, organizations, celebrities and politicians hire PR firms to manage their reputations. Anyone hiring a PR firm to create a comprehensive strategy will no doubt include social media as part of that plan.

It is typical for PR firms to be paid to post on message boards, news-article comment sections, and in the client's social-media accounts. All of this is done to gin up a positive image and further the key messages that the client pays the firm to publicize.

BP used paid shills to quell hatred of the company and to stifle outrage about the Gulf War oil spill disaster.

PR firms don't publicize these practices, but they do happen. The Public Relations Scociety of America frowns upon these practices and considers them dishonest. PR firms have been admonished for these shady practices.

I work in PR for many years. I have friends who run agencies and work in-house for many companies.

It's common practice.

It's not like someone is suggesting that Hillary hired a hit man.

The suggestion is that she hired a PR firm to manage the social-media aspects of her campaign. Not a stretch in the slightest.

Furthermore, you've got a PR strategist giving a detailed account, which sounds very credible and describes what happens in the PR world everyday.

This is no different that Nestle or Coke paying PR firms to manage social media for them and write positive posts about their products.

Happens daily. All over the globe!

I am not naive enough to think in black and white terms that all supporting one side are bad and the other side is clean as a whistle. It doesn't change the fact that Bernie is the only one going after the oligarchy that currently controls our government.

Whatever any other supporters do or say doesn't change this fact for me. I will continue to add my two cents to support Bernie because I believe in him. When I see things like the supposed "Big" fine BP got in their deal with the Feds, only to learn that they get to deduct most of it from taxes (we foot the bill), I am sickened at what America has become. The government would not even require BP to resolve all of the claims first so BP can continue to string out the utter corrupt settlement (joke) process, five and a half years and counting.

Hillary stands for this type of system, she has worked her whole career in it. Say what you want, Hillary will do her part for the Plutocracy and her fundraising supports that! I do not wish to live under corporate rule any longer!

However, charges that Bernie is racist, misogynist or unelectable, in addition to being untrue, do neither Mrs. Clinton nor her organization any good. Even if those paying the trolls are unaffiliated with Mrs. Clinton's campaign organization, it casts doubt on her credibility as a candidate, and she doesn't need anybody who supposedly thinks she'll make a good president casting more doubt on her credibility. Whether you like it or not, that's a problem she had long before Bernie announced his own candidacy and isn't going away anytime soon.

It really does do her good. The idea is to constantly drip feed the suggestion into the ears of people who don't care enough to actually look closely. Unfortunately that is a majority of the voting public. If the campaign is successful then if you ask those people if they know who Bernie Sanders is, you'll get a reply like 'Isn't he the sexist/racist guy who said the bad stuff about Hillary?'. They won't stop to question where that information came from, it just becomes one of those things people 'know' and then its a PITA to try and change that impression.

The best way to counter it is just to increase visibility of Sanders wherever you can, and keep building a positive vibe around the guy. That and continuing to directly counter any accusations of course.

The snarky posts? The DUers who don't seem interested in real communication? I wonder sometimes when I can't get a straight answer from people about what they think and why. Makes me wonder whether maybe some people just haven't thought things through or whether they are paid per post or per hour.

Everyone knows there's a lot of bullshit there--in that respect, it's just like the rest of the internet.

But one thing is for damn-fucking-sure: People who hang out on Reddit are, on average, of a MUCH younger demographic than Hillary and her supporters. In other words, you'd think that if all this hand-wringing about party building were serious, they might not be quite so quick to dismiss something out of hand SOLELY because it's on Reddit.

In other words, they might think that it would be stupid to be so brazenly dismissive of Millennials. But no, once again, Hillary and her peeps know whose shoulders the future of the party rests on: the BOOMERS!

(But don't worry, they'll remember Millennials when they need someone to blame for the NEXT round of election losses.)

As you may know, I've been a staunch Bernie supporter from the get-go because the guy is telling the truth, he is talking about issues I care about, and offers solutions with which I agree. In addition, he isn't taking money from Super PACs and he's been pretty frugal with his campaign spending. Yet he has a growing number of committed supporters, myself included.

I really hate to say this, but when I read the expose in your OP and the entire confession, my reaction was not disbelief. And I DO hate that my reaction was not disbelief. I very much want to believe Clinton would not, herself, advocate anything like this. However she's an experienced campaigner and will pull up the smallest things for the most miniscule advantage. So do I think Hillary is PERSONALLY involved in this, or even knows about it? I cannot answer with an unequivocal 'no.' I just can't. I worked for Obama in 2008 and I know how dirty it got.

Back then, it was never Hillary - it was her surrogates. Did she know what they were going to say? Again I cannot unequivocally answer 'no.'

And the Super PACs? They will do anything. Remember their money comes from the immoral capitalist parasites we call 'billionaires.' These are the scum who allow people to die just for the sake of a little more profit. They are amoral; they will do anything they think necessary to eke out that uttermost farthing from people like us.

Last, I think of my experience on here. There are about ten people who post regularly on here that I have suspected are trolls, paid per post to hijack threads, argue until people get tired and discouraged and give up.

So, thanks for bringing this out in the open.

Ask Woodward and Bernstein. Besides, everyone knows what's going on here- it's practically on cue cards for everyone to see.

Or if they argue that those reinforcement posts are more powerful? Either way, $100 a week is pretty ungenerous wage for working for the Ministry of Truth.

At least Independent Underground News & Talk are not paid by the Sanders Campaign to be Bernie Supporters. We just support Bernie, no pay required, hands down!!!

One reason is that Clinton has already had documented paid Twitter and Facebook friends. Ditto the State Department. Another is that at least one "special" site exists to coordinate trashing of Sanders supporters on DU. No one would give the OP the time of day without this prior history.

The specific tactics do seem way over the top. Not sure I believe them without further proof.

Meanwhile Sandernistas don't need to congregate onspecial trashing sites, and we don't need hashtags like #Hillarysoblack.

I hope, if these sorts of allegations are true, more people will awaken and start to take the mantle of democracy, that so many fought and died for, seriously.

We will have the best future we create. Those in the service of those resisting change are no friends of any of the disadvantaged, of any form of democracy, anywhere, in the world.

That's absolute Kafkasesque...

It would be akin to the drowning of witches...If the poor woman drowned she really wasn't a witch in the first place...

It smells of fanaticism and totalitarianism.

I will quadruple my offer...Maybe the person who made up the story will read this and respond:

invasion of Iraq. It was absolutely clear there were posters there following a script which included the ugliest things possible to challenge those of us who were against it. They repeated themselves and others word for word, day after day.

You knew exactly when a new talking point was added, they may as well have pinned it to the top with bright red lettering. Trotted out over and over until the next one. It was as transparent as all hell.

This has been going on since usenet days. The only way you could *NOT* know that this is a thriving industry is to be naive beyond belief.

Hell, there are a variety of firms that offer these services. They aren't doing it because it doesn't work!

No need to piss on my leg and tell me it is raining.

No clue but anyone who claims this isn't going on or chalks it up to conspiracy theory is either participating in it or benefitting from it.

I just know there are a slew of firms that offer this as a service, and make damn good money doing it.

Nobody pays for things that don't work. You can buy facebook likes, you can buy twitter followers, why on earth would it be a conspiracy theory to think you can't buy posters to push your line?

The first huge incident where this became known was with the Sony PSP "All I want for Christmas" scheme, but since then, several have become noted.

I leave it up to you to decide.

I believe there are real Hillary supporters here but the trolls are pretty obvious. They love to start trouble and just won't stop. That's why I love to use my ignore button. As far as I'm concerned arguing with trolls is a waste of my time.

This is how her "Puma's" behaved in the last election she ran in. This is why the only vote she will get from me is if she is my only credible choice in the General election.
