In An Email, Hillary Clinton Once Wrote: 'Plumpy'Nut?' Plumpy What?

In the latest batch of Hillary Clinton e-mails to be released, there was a list of topics that she presumably wanted to look into some more, dated October 18, 2010. One line in particular stood out: "Plumpy'nut?"

You may be wondering: Plumpy what? For those who work in global health, the word is instantly recognizable.

Our colleague Dan Charles did a story on Plumpy'nut in 2012. In case you aren't familiar with the term, here's his concise explanation: Just over a decade ago, a French doctor invented a treatment for severely malnourished children that had a revolutionary, life-saving impact. The product goes by different names in different parts of the world, such as Plumpy'Nut, Nourimanba and Chiponde. It's basically peanut butter with some added ingredients: dried milk, oil, sugar, and essential minerals and vitamins.

But Plumpy'Nut is not the answer to the question: What's for dinner? "You have to think about it like a drug rather than food," says Meera Sekar, the World Bank's health and nutrition specialist for Africa. It's not a substitute for foods like milk, eggs, meat and grains. "This is for kids who are severely malnourished to help them get back to a normal weight," she explains. Studies have shown that this formulation is one of the most effective ways to nurse malnourished kids back to health, which is why organizations like UNICEF as well as smaller NGOs use enriched peanut butter.

...I expect that we will learn of more of Hillary's liberal concerns.

tooth comb by the circling buzzards of mass media?

"I am sick and tired of hearing about the damn emails" would be a brave and true thing for someone to say just about now. Or again. Wouldn't that get the mass media in a buzz of frenzy if Sanders were to repeat now what he said a few weeks ago?

Do it, sir! Only because it annoyed the corporate mass media like rarely seen before because we all know you believe it.

The Pudgey-nut mass media need another lesson in the issues that really matter to the voters.

most of us would never have heard of "Plumply'Nut."

I, for one, am glad to learn about it. Thus far, Hillary has not been harmed by the scrutiny and these e-mails should be part of the public record anyway, not being classified materials.

On edit: Is this malnutrition treatment only good for children? Or could it be used for malnourished adults and elderly adults?

Plumpy'nut sounds disgusting. Worthy of a feeding tube.
