(51,559 posts)And has a lot of interesting twists and turns. There were charges of "environmental racism" against the Sanders-sponsored legislation that allowed the dumping of Vermont nuclear waste into a mostly Latino border town in Texas, with the help of Bernie's BFF at the time, Dubya:

Chitown Kev provided a lot of info and links in this thread about it:

Also, Sanders' wife, Jane, was a Commissioner on the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission - Vermont Compact. Heres the thread that talks about that, with lots of links in there too: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251621460

(45,319 posts)Since the pretense is 'we care about Sierra Blanca and other remote and poor Texas cities so much' it might help to know the full story of who has flushed their wasted onto the locals of Sierra Blanca and what powers allowed that business to get rolling there......
New York's Sewage Was a Texas Town's Gold
It is hard to imagine places more different than New York and Sierra Blanca, and the contrast has always underscored the mercenary marriage between the nation's largest city and the small town where it has dumped its sewage since 1992. That year, after Congress had prohibited the city from dumping its sludge in the Atlantic Ocean, New York signed contracts with several companies to treat and transport its sewage. One of them was a Long Island joint venture, which began shipping up to 250 tons every day on the 2,065-mile journey to West Texas. The Texas Observer, the political journal, recently called it ''the poo-poo choo-choo.''

Since the OP is so ardently supportive of Sierra Blanca, the OP might want to know that the State of Texas constantly discusses doing more dumping there. One might even think some of DU's most ardent Sierra Blanca advocates would at least know about this but they don't.

(45,319 posts)Many of them did not even know and some still don't. It's hard to imagine, but many NYers don't even think about where their shit goes when they flush, for a decade the answer was 'Sierra Blanca Texas'.

(47,803 posts)A main reservoir for Boston, also very close to the water system feeding into the Connecticut River and the Housatonic Rivers which flow down to Long Island passing through many communities along the way....and is also near the headwaters of the Hudson River and its watershed, which also drains into NYC and one of the largest and most densely populated regions of the country.
A lot of black, brown and white people in that region, including many who are poor.
