President Obama joins Secretary Clinton to "ban the box"

WASHINGTON -- President Obama on Monday will announce a series of measures designed to reduce obstacles facing former prisoners reintegrating into society, including an executive order directing federal employers to delay asking questions about a job applicant's criminal history until later in the application process.

Many states, cities and private employers have already taken steps to "ban the box," which refers to the checkbox on employment applications asking if the applicant has ever been convicted of a crime. However, some federal employers and contractors still ask the question. Obama's executive order will apply to federal employers, but not to contractors.

Civil rights activists have urged Obama to propose the measure, noting that such questions can limit the ability for people with a criminal record to gain employment and get their lives back on track after prison. Advocates argue that those formerly in prison should be allowed to prove their qualifications for a job instead of being eliminated early in the process due to their criminal background.

Hillary Clinton says if elected into office, she would take executive action to ban the box.
“Banning the box” refers to the checkbox marked on job applications that asks the question, "Have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony"?
Clinton’s stance against “the box” would prevent employers from inquiring about criminal history at the early stages of the hiring process and require that agencies that complete background checks do so only later in the process.

Obama's great decision and pretend Hillary had anything to do with it. It's a continual problem with Hillary supporters probably because she has so few accomplishments of her own.

O'Malley actually did this in Maryland already and called for it on Federal level ages before Hillary did. And Obama certainly doesn't follow Hillary's lead on issues.

Should look to O'Malley for the framework. He signed off on banning it in MD in 2013.

It's like - a really simple thing to do.

I like this being on the platform - and they should be all for one and one for all on demanding this.

For me its not so much 'which' Candidate -its the fact that Obama has a framework to work off of and I believe now that both Sanders and Clinton are on board with the idea.

This is something I'd prefer to see end NOW - not in January 2017. The sooner the better.

If I wasn't an empathetic person I would respond in kind to your pusillanimous and deeply personal and vicious attack but being the empathetic person that I am I can see you are still working your way through Elisabeth Kubler Ross' Five Stages Of Grief and are still in the Anger Stage.

As an empathetic person I will be there for you every step of the way, all the way to the final stage which is Acceptance.

Here is a big to tide you over until we meet again.

Puh-leeze. If you consider that to be "deeply personal and vicious", then you need to get out more often. You're just setting the narrative for the eventual alert. Weak sauce.

One of the people who said I should be banned by MIRT last week, or the other jurist who implied that they were my sock puppet voting to leave a post alone are more than capable of making the alert. And bless your heart for that empathy.
