Martin O'Malley says his debate performance was a "shot in the arm for fundraising"

Presidential candidate Martin O'Malley said Friday that his debate performance was a "shot in the arm for fundraising" and said he is "absolutely" confident he will have resources to compete in early primary states despite a lackluster third quarter.

O'Malley is campaigning here a day after his campaign announced it had raised only $1.3 million from July to September, a figure that was significantly lower than the $28 million raised by Hillary Clinton and $26.2 million posted by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The former Maryland governor acknowledged the low numbers but said he believes reaction to the debate will change things. Campaign aides said late Thursday they have seen an increase in online donations, but have declined to provide details about the increase.

"We've seen a big uptick in our fundraising, a big uptick in interest since the debate," O'Malley told The Baltimore Sun after speaking to students and faculty at a technical school. "I feel very good about where we stand right now...it couldn’t have come at a better time."

"I don't think anybody expected to change minds with the first debate, but I think we certainly opened a lot of minds," O'Malley said. "And we've certainly seen a lot of our friends enthused and willing to go deeper and go broader in their own circle and bring their friends to the cause."
