2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDumb question: WHY DID RMONEY PICK RYAN?
everything I hear on DU says it's a great pick for the Dems...but if that is so, why did Willard pick him?
side note: this is the first major ticket that doesn't have a protesant on it: (L.D.S./Roman Catholic)

(26,295 posts)Let's face it, they are one of the few groups he hasn't offended.
And, considering Ryan's social agenda, I'd put him in the category of a small 'c' catholic.

So his selection will offend non-t-bugger Independents, and 'C' Catholics.

(22,308 posts)and the "Son of Boss" scandal, that had just made it into an ad, that he is trying to change the subject to the Ryand (Ryan + {Ayn} Rand) budget.
On Rachel's show last night she did a great job spelling out how they are completely ignoring that ad even though it is running on the air in 4 swing states. They instead are making lots of noise about a Super PAC ad that is web only, the one where the steelworker tells of his wife's death.
It is another Palin style pick. They need a game changer and they need it now. It may be a short term energy infusion but it also might put Florida into the safe category for us and without Florida Rmoney/Ryand can't win.

This does change the conversation henceforth, but taxes won't go away and have done plenty of stinking up the image.
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)and it will be up to the Obama campaign to keep Rmoney's taxes as part of the conversation.

(62,276 posts)Romney needs both sides to be at each others throats so the middle / independents stay home. Otherwise he's fucked.

(6,262 posts)Ryan looks a bit like he could pass for a Romney, but more important, he pulled a lame brain prank on Willard ( can't remember what it was) -- and we all know Willard LOVES pranks.
RMoney feels comfortable around him - plus Janna looks like a younger Ann.
Don't think he gave it all that much analysis. He likes him and the wingers want him.
CJCRANE
(18,184 posts)Romney likes him, they get on well. Plus they're both numbers guys: Romney's interested in how much he can squeeze out of his taxes and Ryan's interested in how much he can squeeze out of the working and middle class.

(7 posts)It's true!
Paul Ryan is a closet MORMON.
There's no other possible reason. The guy's clearly not as good a pick as Biden was. Joe will prove that in the upcoming debates. I hope Ryan is wearing his majic underwear.

Why would the "powers that control the man" choose one of the worst candidates for VP ??

(143 posts)They are jumping for joy over the announcement. That's why Romney choose him. It's like when Reagan chose Bush. Reagan was seen as too liberal for the base. This is how Romney is viewed by the core of his Party.

(954 posts)1. Romney's campaign was under attack from within the GOP
This campaign has been terribly run. They put everything on bashing Obama and basically had no means to rally support around Romney himself. It was backfiring. The gaffes and the lack of "positives" meant they had to react.
The GOP have been raising a BILLION dollars to throw at this election. They were turning on Romney. He needed a pick that put the focus back on "policy issues" which the base could support. Ryan.
2. The Party Platform
Romney couldn't possibly command any sway over this GOP in terms of a moderate platform. The GOP insiders believe they must always pander to the base, Rove-style, which means pandering to the TeaParty and religious-right. The convention is right around the corner, so for Romney to plant a stake in that Platform he needed to make his ticket about it.
The best way for Romney to clearly distinguish himself from Obama on policy was to lurch libertarian. Ryan.
3. The GOP insiders care about Congress and 2016, not Romney
I truly believe that those pouring hundreds of millions into the election only barely believe Romney can actually win. They know the limits of bashing Obama. They are investing in holding onto power in Congress and looking ahead at the next four years. They want to focus on changing the terms of the national dialog. Romney is just a tool for them.
And I think Romney knows that.
For Romney to have a voice in the GOP, he needed to adapt to the change in tone and direction. Ryan doesn't help him win electoral votes, but he helps Romney's legacy and legitimacy as a voice of the new GOP. Even after he loses, Romney has assured himself a central role in the establishment. Meanwhile, he'll hope Obama makes a huge mistake.

(57 posts)Friday afternoons is Trash Day in DC politics, now some may ask why is that called Trash Day, well it is because nobody except political junkies are paying attention when something you really don't regular people chattering about all weekend so you announce it Friday late in the day.
rMoney has been being hammered on his taxes almost to the point of being a distraction and all anything people want to talk about, rMoney could have waited closer to the convention when everyone would be watching and the media would have givenen him all the time he wanted to roll out the VP pick, now it appears that the choice of Ryan is nothing more then a desperate atempt to distract people from his tax problem.
Again it comes back to why Ryan...becasue it does not matter who he picked at all, win or lose for Mitt, the 99% lose and the GOP wins even if President Obama wins in a landslide. Ryan is nothing more then red meat to the RW base.
Gee now why would you post that?
Because that is the reality and the truth.
No REAL 60 seat majority in the Senate nor a majority in the house, the best the Senate can do is a 50/50 split and toss in the Blue Dogs and you have a defacto Pub Majority in the Senate.
4 more years of grid lock is what we will get, along with hoping and praying one or 2 of the Reich Wing a-holes on the SCOTUS croaks and President Obama gets to nominate a moderate Dem, because we all know a Liberal progressive Judge will never be confirmed.
For all intensives purposes the election is over now and America Lost.
This is what bipartisanship looks like folks and has always been President Obamas achilles heal .
The conservations now need to turn to how to mitigate any damage from the RW the next 4 years.
Coyotl
(15,262 posts)because obstruction becomes a big issue. Mitt just delivered one of the best issues the Dems have to the front table on a silver platter, the Tea Party and Congressional inaction moves to the fore. The result will be more Dems elected to Congress on the Obama coattail and control of Congress for the next four years.
Also, this time around, Obama will be able to place his picks on the Supreme Court with ease. The Senate will have new rules in order to make the next four years productive.

(14,276 posts)I think not. There is no one - and I literally mean NO ONE - in the GOP camp who would have been a good pick. They are a collection of sycophantic parrots who unthinkingly repeat the daily talking points supplied to them. Paul Ryan is as good as any of the others simply because they pride themselves on being interchangeable.
